This is the moment they've all been waiting for...

...this is the sound of Altern8!

Last night I took the opportunity to check out Altern8 dj at 93 Feet East which was amazing! I grew up listening to them along with the likes of The Prodigy, The Shamen, Utah Saints etc. and since I was too young at the time to take advantage of the rave scene as it grew in the early '90's, I made sure I got my money's worth last night.

They played a lot of classic rave tunes most of which I've heard over the years but never known who the track's were by. Of course dropping classics like Baby D: 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' and 'Charly' and 'One Love' by the Prodigy but the night wouldn't be complete without their classic which was saved for last:

Mark Archer, one half of the duo has a live mixtape on his myspace page recorded at Reminiscence in Coventry from 2006. It sounds a bit more hardcore to what they played last night, maybe because there is an M.C., I don't know, but this sums up the sound that has influenced many musicians of the so called 'nu rave' era.

The night was primarily the launch party for Spektrum's release of 'Kinda New' which actually came out in 2004, but is getting a second release with additional remixes.

Also playing live were Hunger/Thirst and Kidaswitch. I just missed Kidaswitch's set but saw Hunger/Thirst who were really good. The duo look like a Chemical Brothers tribute group, one sporting the long blonde hair and glasses of Tom Rowlands and the other with short dark hair, Ed Simons style. But don't be fooled by their look, their sound is big and if they played to a festival crowd they would rock it. You can hear their influences from the likes of Justice, SMD, Underworld and indeed the Chemical Brothers but of course they make it sound like their own. Check out their myspace for a couple of their tracks and keep an ear out for them in the future.
