Introducing: Dan M

Dan M
Arena Magazine October 07

Dan M is part of the Yohad! crew and together with fellow member Fredzki, he runs the monthly night: Killing it! @Vega featuring the likes of Zombie Disco Squad, Crookers, Sweat X & Kasper Bjørke to name a few. He is also launching himself into the world of fashion by opening INDOE which as well as stocking designer brands will be the home of the INDOE clothing label.

So where in Denmark are you from?
Originally I'm from 2620 A-Town, the capital of Vestegnen but now I live in Copenhagen, capital of Denmark.

How long have you been djing?
Ive been spinning only a couple of years now and still have so much to learn. First up I did it with a friend for fun around some clubs where we knew people. We got booked as jokers playing stuff that nobody else did, mostly 80s-90s shit. But I got a great passion for djing right away and got very specific about track selection and mixing and wanted to take it to another level.

Has music/djing been a career motivated thing or is it a hobby while you work on bigger things?
Djing is definitely a career thing. I've been spinning in and outside Denmark this past year up to now full time doing 3-5 gigs a week (mostly inside, it wasn't because i wanted to sound superstar like;).
I had to cut lots of the Copenhagen gigs down tho cause I'm going legit now opening up a shop and agency in January 08 (INDOE).

So what are you going to stock in INDOE?
In the shop we are gonna carry sneakers, tees and sweats u know that street wear stuff but pricey tho. INDOE will also be the name of our own brand which is gonna be that same style. The big difference we are making is producing our shit 100% organic. The agency is me and my partner being sales agents for different brands which I'm not allowed to tell of yet. Its all gonna go down at the Copenhagen fashion week in February 08. Check out our blog indoe - indoe.blogspot.com

Do you have a residency or organize any club events?
Through 07 together with my mate Fredski we did some club nights, booking locals and outside djs. First up I was involved in Yohad! a club night Fredski had started with local artist Annika Lori, Dj Djuna Barnes and Clothing kid Shilo from Soulland.
Next project was Killing it! at Vega where me and fredski did some nights together as well. Right now I'm club night free actually but who knows whats gonna happen in zero eight..

Which dj/acts have you featured at previous nights?
At our nights we featured: Crookers, Sweat x, Zombie Disco Squad, Shirkhan, Trentemøller- just to name a few.

Do you produce any material or remix other peoples music?
Yeah I'm getting into producing, why not when one has all that music but theres always something missing in the record bag. Getting into some different programs. Right now I'm working with Ableton live. Find it a bit complicated tho.

Are there any bands or acts that you draw any inspiration from?
In 07 my biggest inspirations has come from trips and gigs in London and Berlin.
style wise I think I'm in between those to cities. German techno and London fidgit house is what has been my foundation through 07.

What was the best part of 2007?
My highlights of 07 has been many here's just s small part of all the good times:
Panoramabar (Berlin), Jesse Rose, Oliver $, Daniel Steinberg, Claude Von Stroke. Playing Killing It! party at Vega with the Crookers. 10 days "tour" in Berlin, Djing and heavy drinking. Playing Drama (Malmø, sv) w/ Duke Dumont, the Bulgarian and Fredski. Playing Untitled #3 (Ulm, Germany) w/ Zombie Disco Squad. Playing at Notting hill carnival (Ldn) W/ Patchwork Pirates. 1000-something downloads of my mixtape in two days at discobelle.net. My beautiful girlfriend of course! Nathaniel and Lucas. Starting my own company INDOE with my homie Numero Uno. My blog 7inch.dk

What are your plans for 2008?
Plans for 08, oh where to start and where to end...
Creativity and love above all.
Djing, Djing, Djing, travelling Djing remixing and doing my own tracks.
Taking care of business with the new company.
Blogging, blogging and blogging, both visiting and writing them.

What will be your new years resolution?
My new years resolution is to get fit again cause damn I'm getting nasty from eating all that fast food.

Romanoff

http://www.myspace.com/theoneandonlyromanoff

I got sent some tracks from this New York duo called Romanoff.

If you were to put Justice's grinding electro, Jan Hammer's synths, Felix Cartel's sound of wrath and a touch of NY House into a mixer, this is what it might quite possibly sound like.

But don't let that put you off, Romanoff pull off some convincing melodic tracks that you can listen to on your ipod. Their sound however, is much more suited to a packed dancefloor. This is music to spill your beer, sweat and dance to.

This is what they have to say about themselves in their bio:

"ROMANOFF is based in Brooklyn, NY and consists of two cousins. They come from diverse musical backgrounds, and draw from many genres. They create music which inspires people to scream and pump their fists. They only play their music when performing their energetic sets. They have performed in Europe and NY, and are currently planning shows for the coming months."

Introducing: Skurk

Rainbow Powered

In Norway, the word 'Skurk' translates as 'Crook' or 'Villain'. It is also the name shared by a trio of Dj's, producers and all round party starters that hail from that same county who make fresh remixes and mix Hip-Hop/New Wave/Electro together, tighter than R-Kelly's last girlfriend.

So who are the members in Skurk and what is it?
"Skurk" is a party in Trondheim, Norway (small city, 150k) at a place called Brukbar/Supa, with three resident DJs: Ninjasheriff, Ali Soulishhh and myself Chmmr. So it's kind of a DJ trio as well, even though we seldom DJ three at a time, as it is a two-store party, were Ali takes one floor by himself.

Can you explain what is the difference between Skurk and Rainbow Power?
The Skurk name is used for specific tracks and remixes (the ones that we feel that apply to the name) by me and Ninjasheriff, both individually and when we make music together. I'm starting to realize maybe we shouldve come up with more names...this is getting complicated. Rainbow Power is just our blog (suprised we didn't call that Skurk as well), and i guess also a mixtape we gave away in May. The blog is basicly just a musical and personal outlet, not trying to beat Discobelle or anything. We should be writing more posts in English, though!

How long have you been together?
We have been running for 2 1/2 years now

What do you guys play?
All of us started out playing mostly hiphop, but now we've moved a little more uptempo...or actually, we just play very varied, like everyone else in Norway these days, or even maybe more. We sometimes move the concept a little round the country, but not often.

Do any of you have a residencies elsewhere or play at any other events?
We don't have any other residencies as Skurk. Individually we have some small ones here and there, and we do some gigs and warmups for bigger names from time to time.

Do you feature any guest djs/artists at your events?
Even though we try to emphasize the fact we are DJs rather than partyfixers, we still book other DJs now and then just for the sake of the party. Like for instance last week we had DJ Sujinho from Nossa.

How long have you guys been djing?
Summed up i'd say we have about 17 years of DJ experience

How long have you been producing?
I've been producing for about 10 years, Ninjasheriff about 3 years.

Do you produce original material as well as remix other artists' tracks?
As with DJing both Ninjasheriff and I started out doing hiphop, but nowadays I like doing everything - I love that feeling of having "broke the code" for another genre, and maybe sometimes creating somewhat of a new sound in the process. That's more important to us than having a signature sound, although lately i've fallen in love with more jacked house, like with the Charly remix, which I did. Ninjasheriff is more into making disco, although I think he has the same attitude towards music-making. I still make original tracks, but I'm more into remixing simply because i got tired of making komps that i never got anyone to join in on. It's about meeting that same musically minded person...I'd really like to meet a good soul vocalist...the ones in our city won't do. And more rappers.

Are there any bands or acts that you draw any inspiration from?
I asked the others what they would say here, and it went like this: Ninjasheriff: U-Tern, J-Star, Mr.Mixx, Diplo, Tittsworth, DJ Eleven, Paul Devro. For myself I agree with about half of these, and would like to add MJ (period), M.I.A., DJ Tameil, DJ Laz, uh...20 Fingers(?), Outhere Brothers, Mr. Oizo, Busta, Snoop, Sa-Ra Creative Partners. The Prodigy and Chick Corea. Ali adds Prince and Montell Jordan, which is the REAL truth.

Introducing: Jim Sharp

Jim Sharp

Part of Brixton's Fidgit Friday night crew and one half of Hear Nu Evil's blog and Dj collective, Jim Sharp is one busy guy. He's already made his mark as J.Bold and now he has stepped up his game and his record speed to 130bpm and is making some of the finest fidgit/Hip-Hop/Baltimore remixes in the country.

So, is Fidgit your weekly event?
Fidgit is a night in Brixton at Plan B every Friday. It's also a crew of dj's similar to the Wu-Tang Clan. There's Benjamin "Nu" Money - el capitain, The World Famous Dixon Bros. - the freshest sibling duo since Womack & Womack, Kid Who - the young ambi-dexterous badmon, D-Boogie & Fly Bryce - newest recruits. I'm like Han Solo or Chewy or some weird hybrid of the two. (imagine in Han and Chewy had kids...)(actually, don't)

Which dj/acts have you featured at previous nights?
We've had Mark Ronson, Ca$h Money, KRS-One, Aaron LaCrate, Andy Smith and a bunch of other good dj's I can't remember.

Do you have a residency elsewhere or play at any other events?
I play up at the Legion on Old St. which is an absolute free-for-all. On a more mature vibe I'll be down at the new spot in Clapham, The Loft. I play a few other places too, but honestly, I'll play records anywhere. I love it.

How long have you been djing?
15 years

How long have you been producing?
Seriously producing about 4 years, but I'm still learning. Every tune i do I learn a new trick. Engeneering is the key to everything and I have legendary mixdown sessions that go on for days... I think I might be catching OCD, but I'm not sure.

You produce material under either the alias Jim Sharp or J.Bold, is J.Bold a colaboration or side project to self titled work?
J.Bold is my "Hip Hop Alias" and Jim Sharp is my 130bpm alias. I think you might still be able to buy some J.Bold records on-line at Juno or somewhere...Collectors items for sure.

You've remixed stuff for Talib Kweli and Tha Alkaholics & Grand Puba's, are there any artists you are currently remixing or you'd like to remix in the future?
I'm just finishing up a an official remix of BB Davis' "Get Carter" (a cover of the original from the film). I'd just like to work with some fresh, open minded artists. If there's any vocalists out there who are looking for a remix or want to collab, get at me. Oh yeah, and I want to work with Amanda Blank (her accent kills me).

Do you prefer remixing other artists' tracks or creating your own?
The remixing thing is fun and let's you showcase your production to people who wouldn't necessarily check your straight production joints. On top of that, being that I'm a hip hop head you're always gonna hear a sample or two in my music.

Are there any bands or acts that you draw any inspiration from?
Some Canadians are running it right now... Deadmau5, VNDLSM, A-Trak, Chromeo, The Stylusts, Team Canada, Illo.

Also, some of the blog dudes are killing it. Dudes like Estaw and Cousin Cole. Toddla T is sicko. Of course Sinden, Herve & Switch. Claude Von Stroke. I could go on for days. There's so many new sounds happening right now... And I read Norman Cook said in the Metro newspaper the other day that dance music is stagnant?!?

You've recently had one of your remix's released on the Hear Nu Evil 12". Can you explain what Hear Nu Evil is and who is involved?
Hear Nu Evil is a shadow corporation that works in the depths of the deepest blogs to search out fresh to def freshness on the net. They're also responsible for smashing parties apart and general mayhem. The physical manifestation is myself and Nu Money. We're like Axe & Smash - Demolition. (Any wrestling fans out there?) It's also a blog. www.hearnuevil.blogspot.com. gully.

iPod's have got a reputation of breaking down after a while, my pod's 2 year's of life came to an end earlier this year but low and behold I bought a new hard drive for the little fellow and fixed it myself after the hard drive directing a big Fuck you to Apple who's only advice when trying to fix my iPod was to trade it in for 10% of my next one. pfft!

Anyway, I had to go through my music collection and put music back on the pod and in the process I dug up my collection of live sets by Arizona's finest; DJ Z-Trip.

I first heard his collaboration with DJ P on Uneasy Listening Vol.1 when I was back in Uni. At the time I was really into the 2 Many Dj's mixtapes and Z-Trip's mixes were almost on the same level but, Z-Trip plays more of a Hip-Hop, Rock and Drum & Bass mash up, sometimes delving into his Trip-Hop collection. I started collecting live recordings of his sets from blogs and forums, here are a few for your listening pleasure:

After A Week Of Rest...

Sorry for the lack of post's recently, I took my first whole week off work this year since Xmas 06, and man I needed it. In fact I could do with getting out of the UK for a bit, but I'm saving that for next year (NY & LA here I come!).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Dollop

Anyway, firstly thanks to the guys up at Dollop, Nottingham for having me come and warm up for Franz & Shape on Friday. I haven't heard much of their live stuff, mostly remixes but they sounded awesome, like an Italian version of Justice. If you're in London I suggest catching them along with Tronik Youth and Slagsmalsklubben at the Amersham Arms in New Cross this Thursday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Take That

Saturday was not my usual Saturday night, as I spent it watching Take That at the O2 Arena. I work for a merchandise company and designed most of the merchandise for the tour and produced an illustration for the tour programme. So, I took advantage of a couple of passes to see what all the fuss was about after they had sold out 48 European dates including 8 at the O2 and a further 11 dates at the M.E.N. Arena, Manchester.

And to be fair the show was very impressive. I wasn't too familiar with the latest material but, when you've grown up listening to various pop compilation tapes you can't help but recognise a couple of the earlier tracks.

The most impressive performance came from backing vocalist Lloyd Wade. He featured on a couple of tracks and played Saxophone on one but, notably sung Gnarls Barkley's lyrics to "Crazy" as a mixed outro to "Relight My Fire".

Mel Ramos: Hunt For The Best

I also took some time out last week to visit the National Portrait gallery to see the Pop Art Portraits exhibition and the Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 nominations.

I was expecting a larger selection of work for the Pop Art Portraits exhibition but I didn't leave dissapointed. It featured a selection of original art from the likes of Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi to name a few. But I was most impressed with the work of Mel Ramos. I love illustrating women and Ramos is an artist who has made a living from doing just this. His work reminds me of Hajime Sorayama, another of my favorite artists who, unfortunatly did not not feature in this exhibition.

The Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 nominations were beautiful as well. I can stare at some photographs for hours just absorbing the detail. There was certainly a good selection on display to keep me entertained.

Pop Art Portraits is exhibiting until 20th January '08
Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 is exhibiting until 24th February '08

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't posted any music for a while, don't worry i'm amalgamating a selection to post shortly.
