The Prodigy - Warriors Dance

A video and audio sample of the new track 'Warriors Dance' from Saturday Nights set in Birmingham has surfaced thanks to Raggametalpunk and ET who runs fan site. There are suspicions in the forums that the track samples an old rave classic True Faith's 'Take Me Away'. I can also hear maybe the slightest snip from Praga Khan's 'Injected With A Poison' and some Justice-esque grinding synths and possibly parts from 'Molotov Bitch' from the Firestarter E.P.

Also, I misidentified another new track which was called 'New Beats' on the Sheffield set list but called 'Unstoppable' on the Birmingham list.

The Prodigy @Plug, Sheffield

So, The Prodigy played two small venue warm up shows this weekend previewing new material. One at The Plug in Sheffield on Friday and one last night at the Rainbow Warehouse, Birmingham. Friday afternoon, I scrambled into a car and drove up to Sheffield from London in the space of about two and half hours, and Wow. What a night. I've still got ringing in my ears.

If you've been caught up in the front of the crowd at a Prodigy gig before you'll know its like being in a giant washing machine. Except, instead of coming out clean, it leaves you dripping with sweat. Not even the jet stream of the air conditioning in this 1000 capacity venue could help stop this place turning into a sweatbox.

The band came on just after midnight. Liam behind his medley of synths, laptops and drum machines and Keith and Maxim took up their positions front of the stage and instantly brought with them their immense stage presence. Like two wolves pacing in front of their prey they welcomed the crowd; "Sheffield are you fucking ready?". Everyone in the room knew it was about to kick off.

As the band fired into new track 'Worlds On Fire' the crowd went ballistic. Surging forward, then pushed backward, left & right, then repeated. Sorting out the strong from the weak. They ploughed into 'Breathe', 'Their Law', and 'Spitfire' before Maxim commended all those still in the mosh pit and ridiculed all those who left it to get a drink and find fresh air. Keith, who always looks like he's on day release from the mental home, was wearing black tracksuit bottoms with 'Invaders Must Die' below a skull and crossbones design. If that's not a big enough clue for the name of the new album, I don't know what is.

They then played new track 'Warriors Dance' which, from what I can remember was a killer, I think it sampled an old rave track, or at least sounded like 90's rave and more of their early material. Unfortunately that was all the new tracks to be sampled although there was a track called 'New Beats' on the setlist? But I didn't care, the set continued to play out their hit singles, my highlight being 'Voodoo People' which along with 'Out Of Space' turned the place into an old skool rave.

Chris Cunningham, director of The Aphex Twin's brilliant Windowlicker has recently been recruited by The Horrors to produce their next album which, I personally can't wait to hear. His first collaboration with the band on their video for Sheena Is A Parasite wasn't as good as I'd hoped in my opinion but I'm not doubting his contribution will do anything but good things to an already brilliant band.

Anyway, back to The Aphex Twin. Check out this quality remix I got from Mac 3000 today which focuses more on vocal samples from the video as well as the main track.

Midnight Juggernauts vs. Cut Copy

A couple of weeks back I had the pleasure of seeing Cut Copy live for the first time at a secret gig at Bethnal Green Working Mens Club. If you love their albums then you're bound to love their live energetic performance. Standing there watching them perform Hearts On Fire in front of the venues' notorious giant heart made of lights just seemed to be one of those moments you see captured in a photograph and featured in the bands autobiography in 30 years time. Maybe.

Anyway, today I got a fresh remix from fellow Aussies The Midnight Juggernauts of the bands 07 summer anthem 'Hearts On Fire' along with this promotional copy from the depths of Modular's galactic pr department.

"With the stardust having barely settled following the release of Cut Copy's number one sophomore album In Ghost Colours and having dazzled audiences with their appearance at the recent Coachella Festival, the boys are back bringing new life to their 07 hit Hearts On Fire. This time blazed out in its new album version glory, the official release of Hearts On Fire is being elevated into the planet Jugular with a touch-up from everyone’s favourite neo-disco astronauts The Midnight Juggernauts, who drape the original in atmospheric organ sweeps, glittering arena echoes and dulcet vocal harmonies transforming it into an intense trip through the universe."

Modular Week

This week see's Modular take over a few nights in London, featuring some top acts as well as their bevy of musical hipsters. Tonight you'll find Ladyhawke as well as Peaches taking over the Macbeth in Hoxton.
I met Pip (aka Ladyhawke) a couple of weeks back after seeing her support the Presets and what a lovely lady she is, her music is pretty damn awesome too.
Peaches is the talented Canadian born electro producer, famous for such tracks as "Lovertits" and "Set It Off". Don't go expecting the Geldof daughter of the same name who is currently competing with Amy Winehouse for the most drug allegation newspaper coverage in the UK's Press.

Tomorrow night is the Stag & Dagger festival which takes over Shoreditch for 6 hours. It might not seem like a lot of time but there is plenty of good acts and Dj's to see spread over 15 venues. Modular have set up camp at Cargo featuring the likes of A-Trak, The Bumblebeez, Thee Bang Gang and Thieves Like Us. Check out the Stag & Dagger website for more details.

This Sunday you can also catch Gus and Jamie from the Bang Gang bringing their eclectic Aussie rave to Ye Old Axe. Head over to their podcast site and get your self some mixes.

Introducing: Louis La Roche

Back in February a track titled 'Love' by the mysterious TB caused a storm of speculation over at Headphone Sex regarding its authenticity as a new product of Thomas Bangalter. As humble as he was shocked that his work could be mistaken for that of his musical hero, a young Brett Ewels piped up to inform us of the mistaken identity and in fact that it was his material produced, under the soon to be named alter ego; Louis La Roche.

So how long have you been Djing?

I've been a bedroom DJ since the age of 10 (year 2000) and I've been playing in clubs seen the age of 16 (early 2007)

Where did your DJ name come from?
Louis' name came about when I started making French House tracks instead of Electro as Night Facilities. I needed a name for a side project, I sat down with my girlfriend and decided I wanted a French name. Like Jacques Lu Cont (stuart Price) I decided on a name followed by 'the something', so 'Louis The Rock' in French became 'Louis La Roche'

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
In dance music? hmm, must of been either 'DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World' or 'Daft Punk - Da Funk'

Do you have any residencies or events you play regularly?
I love to play Superfilth at Catch 22, if you haven't heard of it yet, please check it out, the night is really up and coming and they've had some great acts play in the past.

How/when did you first begin making music?
2004 maybe? Must of been 13/14, I made some songs under the name 'Stronghold'. That was went I didn't really have a sound, I was experimenting and finding my style.

Your previous work under the alias Night Facilities was a more electronic sounding project, what made you turn to the French disco sound as Louis La Roche?
Well I've always loved French House and also disco. I grew up listening to Daft Punk, Les Rythmes Digitales, Alan Braxe, Micheal Jackson, Motown. So i found myself making songs sampling old disco records and using techniques, filters and sounds of 90's French House. I chose the best and released them on a EP, whether I'll release more...we'll see.

Your track 'Love' was mistaken as a new Thomas Bangalter track, how did it feel having your music respected on a similar scale as Thomas?
It was nice but thats not what I'm all about. I'm trying to bring back French House, not trying to sound like Thomas. Fair enough though cos he is the grandaddy of it all, but if someone said I sound like The Buffalo Bunch, DJ Falcon etc then I would be amazed.

Has the hype surrounding this confusion changed your motives or musical direction as an artist?
Not really, its fading away. I'm just proud to say I've made people realise that French House isn't dead, and its here to stay. People have got so obsessed with 'that Justice sound' and forgot about what was before.

As Night Facilities you've remixed other artists tracks, do you intend on putting the Louis La Roche touch to any tracks in the future?
I've had a 2 or 3 artists ask me, so why not. It gives me a chance to use synths instead of samples.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
Hmm thats a hard one. Any legend of mine, Aloud, Raw Man, or Sedat. I've heard that Fred Falke has checked my stuff out.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I don't really think about it too much. Just still making music, trying new styles, new projects. I'd love to work with a band or with another producer, I've only worked with vocalists so far, who knows!

Van She Tech...

Got some fresh tunage from Modular this morning in the shape of some brilliant Van She Tech remixes of both their own work as Van She and the delectable Ladyhawke.

"Back Of The Van is an 80s hair brush sing-a-long that sparkles with discodust. A timewarp jam that is bringing the shimmering synth and bouncy bass of the acid-wash decade to a new audience. Whilst Van She Tech's Fire Engine Remix is a sweaty club rub, laced with a downright dirty attitude."

Taken from the forthcoming debut album out September.

Download: Ladyhawke - Back Of The Van (Van She Tech Remix)

"Strangers is a brain illuminating, post-disco anthem that’ll have all your synapses firing bolts of technicolour in no time. The cosmically charged track is Van She’s 80s synth voyage through psychedelic wormholes and harmonic galaxies - a one-way journey to dancetopia. This time Van She Tech touch themselves up in all the right places with this edit of the inferno."

Taken from the forthcoming debut album out "V" out in August.

Yay! New Oh-Death screen print, now available! I've been working on this design for a while now and its finally finished and printed up in gold on matt black heavy weight card and looks awesome. If a poster doesn't take your fancy then have patience as it'll soon be available on a T-shirt. Check out Little Art Book for more of my prints and a host of other truly brilliant artists:

Also if you're in London this bank holiday weekend and you happen to have a stencil and can of spray paint in your possession, might I suggest that you head over to the Cans Festival on Leake Street, SE1 where you can partake in what "promises to be the largest mass gathering of stencil artists the UK has ever seen and spans an entire London street". That's according to the guys at P.O.W. and if you're not already acquainted with these guys they know what they're talking about.

Drugs! Drugs! Drugs!

Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered LSD, passed away yesterday at the slightly unpresidented age of 102. To commemorate the scientist who brought the world a spectrum of colour to the 1960's and beyond, here's a mega post from Philly's aptly titled Designer Drugs. If you haven't heard about these guys check out my interview with them here. Oh, and if you were born yesterday and want to know all about LSD check out this 1960s LSD Propaganda Film.

I saw Thieves Like Us just over a year ago at Durrr and haven't heard much from them since, (mind you I have been busy). Their tracks 'Fass' and 'Drugs In My Body' are both awesome and I still have yet to get around to re-mixing 'Drugs In My Body' since I got hold of the track elements from that Kitsune remix competition they ran ages ago. Anyway, here DD's version.
