Introducing: George O'Connor

I got this mixtape through the mail from George O'Connor also known in the LA party circuit as Panty Dropper. Originally intended for an official release, the mixtape has hit various legal issues with the said tracks. Shame really as it's quite an awesome mix but, hey he's passed it on for me to share so dig in and get your daily fidgit/ jackin' electro dose while reading my interview with him.

So how long have you been Djing?
I came up on my first Technic's 1200 in 1994. For the other deck I used my moms home stereo turntable, which had one of those automatic tone arms and no pitch control, and my boy had a radio shack mixer. We made do with what he had available. So we were into booty house or what was called deep house back then as well as a lot of the Chicago stuff in general. And it was heaven on earth growing up in LA during that time. We had so many record stores. Beat non-stop.. dmc records.. just to name a few so it was only natural that I wanted to contribute in my own way to this culture I grew up around.

How did the Panty Dropper alias come about?
The origin of Panty Dropper is real simple.. I wanted a name that could be marketable. I'm envisioning.. baby t's.. booty shorts.. g-strings! haha. That’d definitely be nice.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
The first track to get me was Stereo MCs - Connected. But my favourite tracks of all time are: 1. Steve 'Silk' Hurley - The Word Is Love & 2. DBX (Daniel Bell) - Phreak

Do you have any residencies or events you organise or play regularly?
I’ve held down a few residencies here in LA in the past but I’ve been concentrating heavily on some big one off's coming later 2008 with my partner Freddy Foxx and LAX Productions. I should note that I’ll be playing with Stupid Fresh coming up next month on the 27th.. I’m looking forward to partying with those guys!

Which is your favourite club night/venue to play and why?
I’m the worst with names but I remember the area.. Its along the Texas / Mexico border.. its in McAllen, Texas. Forget the fact that its usually 95+ degree weather there.. its all about the girls! Gorgeous, friendly big Texas personalities and they're no question that they're there to party.. Plus some rad chick actually asked me for my autograph. Easy win. Oh.. and best sound goes to Key Club in Hollywood with the Pure Filth system set up.

Are you a regular on the Powertools LA radio show or have any other regular radio slots?
The wonderful thing about that show is that they help local guys who are really deserving of getting their names out there. I keep in rotation and I've found I’m now more in a position where I like to keep an open ear for that next big talent.. help them get that break. I’m also a very big fan and contributor of www.grooveradio.com hosted by the legendary Swedish Egil!

Do you remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
I’ve done both under Panty Dropper - but due to issues I’ve had to remove the tracks do some legal bullshit.. but that should be resolved soon and you can expect even more quality beats in the near future. I got Larry h parker on the case.

If you could collaborate with anyone on a track who would it be?
Switch. just to get schooled.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I’m lucky enough to have a good back up plan but the goal is just to make a living at something I enjoy. I currently happen to enjoy playing loud music in a city I’m not familiar with for people I don’t know. I love it man. its like I’m tweaking some knobs.. I look up and some random chick is smiling at me while shaking her ass.. then some dude throws his hand up and yells "fuck yeah!" incoherently. that’s where I want to be in 10 years.

What are your plans for 2008?
Would it be too much to ask to have a year like Deadmau5 did last year? I mean.. holy shit! when the fuck did he sleep? more like methmau5.. am I right? Haha. That guy is a pure genius. Ok.. back on topic. I had taken a short break but things are now in the works.. I’m playing with Doc Martin in a few weeks.. Wolfgang Gartner & Stupid Fresh is also coming up.. and my company LAX Productions has something MAJOR for 2009 in LA.. so most of my attention has been with that project. oh.. I’ve also worked heavily with the good folks at Prompt Digital please take the time to check them out. Other than that I hope to find a few new fans who dig what we're doing out here in LA with guys like Jon Pegnato, Dj Dan, Alternative Reality, LA Riots, Villians, After Midnight, etc.. it's an exciting time to be a fan of this music!

Talk Like That

New video for The Presets' third single 'Talk Like That' due for release in September featuring remixes by Jence (Digitalism), Dave Spoon, Optimo, CFCF and more. The video was directed by Jonas and Francois, also responsible for Kanye West's 'The Good Life' & Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E'.

It's a shame there's no illustrative input from So Me it would have been good to see slightly darker illustrations from his usual character. But, I guess the world and his mate want's So Me to work on their video so theres no point looking like everyone else.

People On Horses

Jeeeeeez! This week is turning out to be busier than Sienna Miller's underwear (in a kind of up, down, in, out, change your mind kind of way). And fuck, this weather ain't helping. I'd rather be by the beach but, lying in the sun don't pay the bill's unless your Christiano Ronaldo. Fucker. Anyway, pent up frustration aside, tomorrow I'm looking forward to spinning some jackin' electro krunk to the patron's of 333 for People On Horses and co hosted by Nuke Them All.
I'll be playing alongside the likes of NIYI, Buster Bennett, Chupacabra, Alex Sedano & Copycats
to name a few so get on your glad rags and come sweat it out with us.

Monday Megapost

Ok, Ok, its not Monday, I know but I was busy art working shit for Latitude and Camp Bestival yesterday and didn't get around to posting it, so here we go.

First up, yet more bangin' remix action from Designer Drugs. They've worked their DD magic over Messinian's track 'Throw It Away' and have resulted in making a pretty-damn-fine-hands-in-the-air-floor-filler of a track. Get yourself downloading and get jumpin'.

Introducing: Kelevra

UK based Kelevra is currently causing a stir in the fidget circuit with his Bad Dog EP charting #1, 2, & 3 on djdownload and similarly on the Beatport electro charts. He's had releases on labels such as Vacation Records, Crux, Wearhouse Music, PottyMouth and his own Krunk Records label is soon to be unleashed. He originally started out producing Techno but has found his forte in fidgit house and his current release "Grab Ya Funkstick" is a perfect example of this 'Bad Dog's talent.

So how long have you been Djing?
I have had decks for years, since I was 12 infact, I tend not to mix much at home anymore just when I play out now it's like riding a bike I guess!

Where did your DJ name come from?
The name came from Lucky Number Slevin, the guy is called Slevin Kelevra and he's one bad ass mo-fo, it translates to Bad Dog (Kelevra is a hebrew word) in english so I thought it was cool!

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Ever since I was a kid really, I've liked dance music since it started tbh, I think Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam is the first proper housey/dancey track I can remember loving!

Do you have any residencies or events you organise or play regularly?
I am resident for my own KrunK event which begins after the Summer @ Stylus in Leeds(UK), the night is Fidget/ Jackin/ Wonkey House based and it starts Oct 2nd, with More Guests still TBA, but we also have Detboi, Stupid Fresh, Lee Mortimer, Myself, Foamo, Jak Z, Scott Cooper, Bad Robot, Eddie Zanetti, Ill Phil & More... Keep an eye out for some huge guests over the coming months!

Which is your favorite club night/venue to play and why?
I really enjoyed playing Space @ The Cross in London, also I recently played a night called Break Out in Cheltenham (UK), wasn't a huge night but had a wicked atmosphere.

How/when did you first begin making music ?
I first started producing around 2000 making techno amongst other things but finally found my sound over the last year really with the way fidget/wonky house is now I love it!

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
I think most artists love to remix, its great to take someone else's idea and make it your own, but still its great to do original stuff too, I would say I prefer to remix though actually.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
I would love to work with Switch, Herve, Sinden or Fake Blood all class acts!

Your Krunk Records label is soon to be unleashed, have you got anyone special lined up for future releases?
I have got a mixture of upcoming and established people involved so far, the first release is Myself & Drusif - Raggamuffin with a Bryan Cox, Nicky Supply, Mightyfools & 2bit Thugs remix. I am planning the second release at the moment, but KrunK 001 should be out by the end of July early Aug.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Hopefully fully established and still rocking it!

What are your plans for 2008?
Plans are to keep putting stuff out there I have about 20+ trax & remixes waiting on release on labels like Potty Mouth, Crux, Wearhouse Music, Vacation, Movement Music etc also to keep DJing all over the UK & abroad... work on KrunK the label and make KrunK the event a success.... Busy old year ahead?!!

Jump! Jump!

Remember the days when kids used to wear their clothes back to front, replicating the trend of Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly and Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith aka Kriss Kross?
Because I don't. I think it missed the rural hometown setting of Salisbury which, wasn't hard as it's not exactly the most up to date on anything let alone fashion. Remember 'Spliffy'/'Eclipse' jeans? They were compulsory uniform for hanging out in town on a Saturday. Sooooooo 1992 darling.

Anyway, less reminiscing about the not so great things and more about the good, like this Dave Dirt remix of the brilliant 'Jump' by Kriss Kross. Its got the tempo of an electro beat but still keeps its hip hop tempo during the drop. Definitely one for any house party playlist.

Ladyhawke

"Ladyhawke aka Pip Brown is the Kiwi born, Aussie bred, now London residing artiste who stitches pure modern electro pop with the vintage disco elements of a bygone era. Her fancy footloose music is quickly taking the world by storm, first she recorded with Peaches, then she performed three times in two days at the world's biggest festival - Glastonbury, now the aero-temptress is doing what even Madonnna hasn't achieved - her very own video arcade game! Okay, so maybe it isn't as graphically as advanced as the new Grand Theft Auto, but it's much more interesting - in all it's 8-bit glory. Get this; you (as Ladyhawke) fly through the air, like some sort of superwoman, while giant magical cats shoot fire balls out of their mouths at you, and you fight back with your totally dangerous bullets! Sounds like every nerd's wet dream, doesn't it?"

Introducing: Kid Color

Kyle Woods aka Kid Color is a DJ & producer from southern California currently residing in Chicago. He sent me a brilliant mixtape (below) the other day along with a few remixes he's triumphed so I thought I'd better find out more about this eager beaver currently making all the right moves in the Windy City.

So how long have you been Djing?
I've been DJing for about a year and a half. I was first inspired to buy turntables after seeing Steve Aoki & Blake Miller perform as Weird Science in LA. There's a video of that exact show on youtube where you can see me just dancing as though my life depended on it – probably about 40-45 seconds into it. It was after that when I decided that I wanted to do exactly what they were doing. So that whole summer, I locked myself in my room and taught myself everything. I did my research on anything I could get my hands on about DJing – reading anything by Frank Broughton & Bill Brewster, studying tons of different DJs' mixes, learning how to beat match on German minimal vinyl I found on sale at Amoeba music - I couldn't get enough. I figured everything would be necessary in order to help make me evolve into the kind of DJ I wanted to be.

Where did your DJ name come from?
I wanted my name to be simple but somehow give the overall vibe and aesthetic of my music and performance. As I was starting to produce and DJ, I was super influenced by Steve Aoki whose stage name is Kid Millionaire. I actually had the chance to meet him a couple times, as I was just starting out, and he was actually the one who helped point me in the direction of the Chicago crew Dark Wave Disco, who I actually DJ with today. So the "Kid" part is actually my way of paying homage to him. Now "Color" just came from the image in my head of when I would think about the kind of parties I wanted to DJ – colorful lights, good energy, definitely disco influenced.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Well, I've always loved music that gives off that "dance energy". The very first cassettes I ever owned as a kid all shared the same poppy-house-dance vibe: Jock Jams, Ace of Base, and those "Drew's Famous" dance compilations you can buy at any party supply stores (www.tutm.com). Though the record that really made realize that I wanted my life to involve dance music as much as possible was Daft Punk's "Homework". If we want to get specific, it was the song "Phoenix" that really did it for me. When I used to work for Filter Magazine, I would have to drive an hour every day from Orange County to Los Angeles, and for one whole summer I would listen to the entire album of "Homework" back and forth every day. And whenever it got to "Phoenix" I couldn't stop listening and would just have to play it over and over. This was the main reason why I used the song in "Phoenix B-O-O-T-AY" because it really was the one song I can credit that help made me who I am today.

Do you have any residencies or events you organise or play regularly?
Since moving to Chicago, I've had the chance to work with different promoters and help out with different parties. My good friend Skyler and I are starting a new monthly night at Debonair Social Club, which is going to be super fun and will be starting this month. Dark Wave Disco and I started up a monthly 18+ called Blow The Speakers which had a great turn out through had to go on a small break and will be brought back in sometime August. Not to mention Flosstradamus just had me play a party with them last week and I guess that is going to turn into a monthly party as well. Chicago's the place to be this summer!

Which is your favorite club night/venue to play and why?
There's so many clubs in Chicago, it's tough to choose. Definitely my favorite is Debonair Social Club, just 'cuz everyone that goes there are my good friends, so it's just a fun place to perform or just hang out. But if anything, I love playing at venues like Subterranean & The Abbey more than clubs just because it really makes the night feel much more like an event rather than just a usual club night. It also gives the DJ a much better connection with the audience. With all the high energy, strangers sweat all over you, and everyone dancing less than a foot away from you, it's honestly the closest thing a venue can get to a house party. And let me just add, house parties to me will always hold a special place in my heart.

How/when did you first begin making music?
I first received an electric guitar when I was nine years old. Like every kid that's ever picked up a guitar, I started and joined different bands all up through high school. I then developed a taste for the bass guitar and soon moved onto drums. It wasn't until the beginning of my Junior year when I started to work with any sort of electronic music. It was then when I did my first remix, which was of Interpol's "Obstacle 1" which will always be one of my favorite tracks.

Do you produce original material as well as remix other artists and make bootlegs?
I'm always down for remixing artists, so if you know any interested send them my way! And I'm actually in the process of working on an EP with original material. It just feels like the next step to take for myself. Things have been working out great so far. People got into my Bangers & Cash/Daft Punk mixes and the reception I've been getting from Carded & DisCarded has been better than I could imagine. There's no name for the EP yet, but I can tell you that it'll be heavily influenced by Funk Legacy, Surkin, De La Soul, Soulwax & Siriusmo.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
As far as producers go, I would have to say Surkin or Siriusmo. The reason I'd want to work with Surkin is 'cuz his original production is so universal on the dance floor it's incredible. The quality in his material is so fresh, his sound is really one step ahead of the game. And as far as Siriusmo goes, once you hear his signature beats and bass lines, they'll never leave your head. It's about time he finds a MC and just takes over the music scene. Have you heard the potential for a verse on his track "WOW!"? Or even the B-side track "Discosau"? I have full faith he is going to bring some great material to the dance scene in the next year or so.

Now if I could choose an MC to work with, it'd be either Spank Rock's Name Juwan or The Go! Team's Ninja. Both of them have some of the most unbelievable style and flow. Not to mention, both of them put on amazing live shows. Whenever you see them perform, the only question in your head is, "How can one person be so cool?"

But of course there's a ton of Chicago acts I'd love to work with – Hollywood Holt, Ill-Eagle, Vyle, He Say, She Say, the list can go on forever.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Making a career out of something I love doing. And if that "something" happens to be DJing then great, as a matter of fact, I'd love for it to be that, but there's plenty of things I have in store to accomplish over the next decade that could lead me in any direction – the Kid Color EP, starting a magazine, touring, writing short stories and video blogging – anything can lead me to a new point in life, but if I end up still DJing, hell I'd love it no matter what. Oh, I also plan on creating & producing my own response to one of my favorite albums of all time, The Avalanches' "Since I Left You", sometime in my life. So check that out by 2K18.

What are your plans for 2008?
I'm planning on finishing up 2008 with a bang. I'm producing my first EP that should be ready to be released by the end of the year and I'm working on a tour for sometime before Winter. There's a ton of different things still up in the air as for 2008. There's some talk that I might do a little tour DJing for an MC I know we all love, but since it's still unconfirmed I don't want to namedrop. I'd would also love to make it over to London to see how the scene was over there on the other side of the pond. Other than that, I'm just planning on just doing what I do best, working hard, and seeing what comes from it.
