Hundreds & Thousands

Now tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure there's something in the water (or lack of it) in Australia thats leading young musicians to go buy a synth and start making really psychedelic synth based music. Theres probably loads of it over there, every shop is stocked to the brim with wall to wall Jean Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream...

Actually, last time I was there that wasn't the case. We should be greatful for a lot of the music coming from that corner of the world. They more or less invented indie dance which was later branded Nu Rave by the twats at NME and every band and his mate then followed suit here in the UK.

Anyway, whether you like it or not theres a lot of good music filtering through from down under at the moment and Melbourne duo Hundreds and Thousands are no exception, check out these little masterpieces.

Thankyou Reading!

Pic: BBC

Well I think I've pretty much recovered from a brilliant weekend at Reading Festival although I'm still tired and am a couple braincells short of a brainwave. This explains why I have a hazy memory of various bands and I don't remember much apart from being very drunk.

Seasick Steve was cool, Crystal Castles were intense, Digitalism were wicked, Metallica were loud, Justice were quiet, there were quite a few people wearing Joker and Barack Obama t-shirts, the food was crap and over priced and car's were set alight... all in all an awesome weekend.

As usual the other stages were just too small for some bands. MGMT, Pendulum and Gallows amoung others completely packed out their sets. Even the giant screens and patheticly quiet speakers outside the BBC tent couldn't compensate. The main stage even struggled to broadcast The Queens Of The Stoneage without the wind affecting the sound. But that didn't stop Rage Against The Machine and Metallica with their awesome pyrotechnic enhanced performance stealing the show.

Ah well, complaints aside I consider myself lucky for at least getting in. Since arriving into Reading station on Thursday was like walking into refugee camp as loads of people had been stung by those dodgy ticket websites promising tickets on the weekend. The touts were doing their best to take advantage of the situation with tickets exchanging hands for up to £550. Fuckers. Anyway, heres to an awesome weekend looking forward to the same next year. I'm off to go stalk Alice Glass.

Back To School

I for one am certainly feeling the after effects of a long bank holiday weekend and working early on a Tuesday morning is not me any favours. Thankfully I have this tight little mixtape from one third of LA's Breakdown collective, Reid Speed. I consider it to be hair of the dog in audio format, in a good way of course. Mission Control To Designer Drugs

Currently supporting Van She on their 'V' release parties new Etcetc signing Mission Control
have been given the once over by NY party monsters Designer Drugs. Sounding slightly of the Midnight Juggernauts/ The Emergency psychedelic space synth vein currently dominating the Australian music scene, Designer Drugs have reworked their vocal against a wall of driving synth enough to get any party started.

Another track fresh off the press from the Billion Dollar Dj's and, dare I say it, an Oh-Death exclusive? Either way these guys can do no wrong, this is yet another example of their fine ability to take the smallest elements from an original track and turn it into a customised electronic belter of a masterpiece.

Alternative Reality

A couple of weeks back I featured an interview with George O'Connor and since that post there has been some conflicting opinions in the comments section as to the rightful credits of the tracks that were posted.

The comments pointed to Alternative Reality as the sole producer so, I decided to contact him and it turns out that he was once working with O'Connor under the Panty Dropper guise but Alternative Reality was the writer and producer of these tracks and O'Connor was the Dj and booking agent. Unfortunatly things didn't work out between the two and they parted. But as it seems, O'Conner shared the tracks with me to post under the Panty Dropper alias, failing to mention any credit was due to Alternative Reality.

I appollogise for any inconvenience caused to this error, but Alternative Reality was happy for me to share these tracks with you but to make a point that he takes full credit for the writing and production of them. Please make sure you stop by his myspace to show some love.

Little Bit

The angelic voice of Lykke Li seems to get more beautiful the more I listen to it, this remix by Swedish dj/producer/remixer Klumpfisk is no exception. Unlike some of the other remixes out there he's kept the vocal as the center piece and built around it, preserving this awesome voice. Here's what accompanied the remix in my mailbox:

"To those of you who appreciate genuine handcraft in these times of mass-produced nonsense, Klumpfisk presents yet another trip to the shores of the Baltic Sea. Made from small amounts of matter, but from larger amounts of time, before you lies a beautiful example of what a pop song of 2008 could or could not be. If this doesn't make you shiver, either your brain or your nerves may be damaged."

Introducing: John Bourke

John Bourke is one half of Oklahoma City's thrash/electro group Trash Yourself. You may have heard their track 'Touch' in a few mixtapes recently along with their reworking of Blur's 'Song 2' with Toxic Avenger. Bourke took some time out from working on their debut album to answer some questions and to share some mixtapes and music with us.

So how long have you been Djing?
I have been Djing since around 2001.. but have been writing music much longer. I got my first guitar for my 6th birthday, and bought my first synth when I was 13.

How did Trash Yourself and begin when did you first begin making music?
Trash Yourself began by me DJing around down in Oklahoma City. I was throwing and DJing at some underground highly illegal parties at this warehouse stop. The other half of Trash Yourself, Heidi, came out to one of the shows. It turned out that we had a class next to each other the following week and we started talking in the hall before class. She was getting into Electro music and wanted to start rapping or something. At the time Toxic Avenger had sent me a clip of Song 2 that he started. She recorded vocals over that and it just kinda worked. So here we are.. The journey is just beginning.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
DHS - House of God
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
One of Dieselboy's old albums
Orbital - Halcyon
Prodigy - Smack my Bitch Up
Chemical Brothers - Setting Sun
Daft Punk - Around the World

Do you have any DJ residencies or events you organise or play regularly?
I do a Wednesday night in Oklahoma City called Robotic.

Which is your favorite club night/venue to play and why?
I don't know if I have a favorite really. I always have fun where ever I go. My last trip to LA was fun. The electro scene is jumping off there.

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
I take more pride in making something thats all my own heart and soul. Remixing can be fun too though. I love to work with other people and share ideas.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
I would like to work more with my friends, shiny toy guns. They are amazing song writers and I have learned a lot from them.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Probably still DJing and writing dance music. Traveling the world.

What are your plans for 2008?
Writing nonstop / gigging non stop. We have a lot of new material that is being horded, which will soon be released.

Isaac Hayes R.I.P.

Isaac Hayes: August 20, 1942 – August 10, 2008 R.I.P

I have never really been familiar with the work of Isaac Hayes, only of his theme track for 'Shaft' and of course the voice of South Park's Chef. I found this mixtape today by Dj Wonder via The Fader which, brought a whole new perspective to his music. I realised that I had grown up listing to Hip Hop and Rap artists' track's which, like many soul legends, had mostly sampled from his music. For those unfamiliar with Hayes' work or those who are just general fans of Hip Hop, I suggest having a listen to this mix and realise how much influence Hayes had on the rap world.

Death Sets

This weekend I'm playing a couple of Dj sets, the first of which I'm really excited about.
Thick As Thieves have invited me to come play some records at their night VooDoo on Friday at The Last Days Of Decadence (previously Ditch Bar), Shoreditch featuring Shadow Dancer, Jack Beats, Lost In Paris and Harry Benson. Unfortunately I couldn't make the last one but I was told it went off in there. Erol Alkan even showed up with Justice's Gaspard Augé and Djed alongside the Mystery Jets. Sick.

Anyway, start preparing your finest dancing outfit and sign yourself up to the Facebook event and I'll see you Friday.

Get Off The Beach

The Presets are currently prepping for shows in Munich and Berlin later this week followed by rounding up some European festival shows before they jet to the states to further indulge the world's ear's and mind into the sound of Apocalypso. During this time Kim has managed to pull together a tracklisting for a mixtape to "get you off the beach", as it were. Heres what they had to say on their myspace:

"The Presets' Kim Moyes conjures images of white-sand beaches on the face of the moon and slow motion circus rides on their new mixtape, entitled G E T O F F T H E B E A C H.
It's one loopy, tripped out summer vacation you wish you were on, veering from the bendy early synth work of Raymond Scott to the politico-funk of Public Enemy to the twisted techno of Aphex Twin and Compuphonic & Kolombo with a polite dash of Sepultura thrown in for good measure, G E T O F F T H E B E A C H feels fabulous at midday and sublime at midnight."
