I Am 1 Today

Well it's finally here, the one year anniversary of this random dribble of text, music and graphics that some of you might call a blog. It's been a very busy year for me and I want to thank all who have contributed their brilliant music and mix tapes and all of you who keep coming back for more. I probably started off with a couple of you guys reading my ramblings but, since I started tracking my web traffic back in March I now have a steady average of about 200 hits a day which I think is amazing, so thank you all.

As you might already know, I'm a graphic designer working for a merchandise company in London designing tee's for bands and festivals. Not every band is as open minded to great illustration on their T-shirts as I'd like to see but you can see some examples of my better recent projects above. Some were made, some were not.

I have been working on the Oh-Death label as my side project for over a year now. My work on this blog is not for profit, the only money I make other than the 9-5 is off my prints and T-shirts so thanks to all of you who have purchased them over the past year or so. Also, thank you to those who have shown interest in me producing illustrations and designs for your band, website, etc. I apologise if I haven't got around to working on some of them yet but managing a full time job and finding the time to blog and design in my spare time is difficult to say the least since it's still a one man operation. But I would say that if enough of you start asking then maybe I could live the dream of designing stuff I love and blogging full time. Ah well, a guy can dream can't he?

Anyway, here's a little celebration I dug up the other day. It's a live birthday mix I made in 2004 back when I was still making mashup's high on the influence of the 2 Many Dj's mixtapes and a note able 80's indulgence. Hence the oh so clever university Dj name 'Vinyl Richie', haha...ha....ahh, yeah anyway. Those who have heard my mixes under the Oh-Death guise might notice my choice of tracks that mixed well together resurfacing from this original mixing experiment.

I'm still slowly getting my head round SoundCloud and what a brilliant thing it really is. It's ability to share and preview other people's music is amazing and the media player is the best I've seen in a long time. I've already received and posted tracks that some of you have sent me using the service but for those still uploading to zshare and the like feel free to try uploading directly into my inbox using the button on the top right of the blog.

Here's a promo I received from Zodiac Cartel which isn't out until the 27th but you can have a preview of it here in full. And unlike some online record stores you can click to different parts of the track and listen to whatever, whenever you want. Also, if you hover your mouse over the icons along the bottom of the player you can read comments of others reviewing the track.

For those who have a SoundCloud account just click on the track name below to link up with Zodiac Cartel. As for those who haven't I suggest pleading with SoundCloud to give you one.

Diesel XXX / Predator Rap

I was shown a couple of video's on Youtube over the weekend which were pretty amusing. First up is Diesel's new viral campaign video for their XXX party on Oct 11th featuring animations drawn over retro porn video's. Absolutely brilliant. The corn on the cob bit gets me every time.
For more info on the Diesel XXX party at Matter, London and around the World head to their website.

Secondly is this rap/ plot outline for the Schwarzenegger 80's classic Predator. Put together very cleverly to fit with quotes from the original film.

Some fresh modular tuneage for your ears.

"G.L.O.V.E.S is the one man remixing machine who has been spreading his love muscle on some of the of the finest music on the market. he has quickly become infamous for his ability to turn a track into an anthem saved only for the most prestigious of dancers. On the new Van She single "Changes" G.L.O.V.E.S has yet again sprinkled his disco dust over every aspect of the track which is sure to leave your new sneakers stuck to any dance floor. More chilled than bangin', more fresh than noisy - this remix is sweeter than whatever is playing on your stereo right now."

"...Holidays To Remember"

So, I made it back to the UK, safe, sound and sun burnt. No thanks to XL Airways who went into administration on the second day of my holiday. Awesome. You would think that they'd see it coming and inform you so you could make arrangements to fly with another airline first and not have to fork out almost double what the original tickets cost just to get home? Thanks for that. At least I'm home unlike the 5 people who were escorted off the returning flight before take off for being drunk and disorderly. Gutted.

Anyway, I'm ploughing through my emails now so expect new posts asap.

Well I think I've just about recovered from yet another awesome Bestival but it's already time for me to pack my bags and head on my first holiday out of the UK since 2006. But before I leave I'll drop these little treats on you from Seattles' Thrills. He's already getting praise from the likes of Drop The Lime, Le Castle Vania, Destroy Disco and Edu K so he's obviously pushing the right buttons. Enjoy.

Introducing: Alternative Reality

Born in Ecuador and raised in California, Alternative Reality has fast become a familiar name in the LA party circuit. He's already produced two tracks charting at 25 & 19 in Beatport’s Electro Top 100 and has set up the Prompt Digital record label featuring artists such as Stupid Fresh, Twocker, Jaimie Fanatic and Dirty Freqs to name a few.

So how long have you been Djing?
Wow, looking back since the age of 9. My brother was a DJ here in Los Angeles and like little brothers do, I followed in his foot steps. Funny thing is that I was a trouble maker always broke things, he told me to stay away from his tables. One day dude was late from wherever the hell he was, I decided to pop a record in next thing you know I was going off beat like 2/2 echo effect...never looked back.

Where did your DJ name come from?
I had a very common DJ name (Adonis). I was then told it was already heavily represented by the creator of "No Way Back". So I then decided to cook up something fresh & new. I then started talking to myself like a mad man "I need an Alternative name, but in Reality my name is... "I stopped right there and said Alternative Reality! I know lame....but thats the truth.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Mr. Lee - Pump That Body. Till this day it is my favorite Hip-House Record. Great energy and rocking it on my iPod, car and soon on my sets (remix on the works).

Do you have any residencies or events you organise or play regularly?
With production & running a label as a priority, I have to be very picky as to what gigs I take. None have crossed my way of interest. So at the moment I'm stuck at Prompt Studios remixing, producing and thinking of new ways to market the label, myself and our roster of all stars.

How/when did you first begin making music ?
I started back in 2000. Bought myself a music generator for the PlayStation and thought I was the best thing that hit the block. Then of course moved into Acid 3.0 started making mega mixes. I then ran into a good friend who is now my remix/production partner C.planes, who introduced me to Reason 2.0. Then here we are now.

You run the Prompt Digital record label, who do you have on the roster and what upcoming releases can we expect?
Prompt has come a long way and I'm very proud of every artist it carries. We have the likes of: Stupid Fresh, Twocker, Mike Balance, Rooster & Peralta, Donald Galude, Jaimie Fanatic, Tony Arzadon, Dirty Freqs just to name a few. We have a hot package being put together right now with Columbian sensation "Jorge Jaramillo" aka Who Da Funk called "France Dance" featuring the lovely Sue Cho. Remixers will be announced soon.

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
I prefer to do originals because I have no dead line and can do whatever I want since it is my concept and well basically no restrictions. With remixes I sometimes can be limited to what the label wants or artist.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
I would love to work with DLG. He is a big influence in my music and has musical class. Very original and has an amazing live PA set! Thanks for the drop Dave! And Pharrell he is a big influence on percussion for my music and has an amazing 80s sound modernized.

What was your highlight of 2008 so far?
Wow so many! But I will narrow it down to the following "Electric Boogaloo", "Revenge In The Disco". Those 2 tracks hit high on Beatport's overall Chart and got heavily supported by todays world top leading DJs/Producers. Being remixed by Robbie Rivera. Having myself & Prompt Digital being heavily supported by Richard Vission (Los Angeles DJ Icon and personally look up 2). Hearing my songs on prime time radio (power 106, thanks Rob).

What are your plans for 2009?
We are getting ready to take our music to another level. My production/ remix partner C. Planes, the lovely Eliana and I, have decided to challenge our selves with a new sound and form a band that will let us express our creativity to a broader audience.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I see myself enjoying music as I do now. Only difference is that it will be in a global scale spreading love and anthems with all hard working producers and DJs.

MGMT - Kids (Soulwax Remix)

So last Thurday Palms Out Sounds caused a massive stir when they posted the Soulwax remix of MGMT's Kids. Oh how we laughed when after downloading we discovered we were none the better off and had clearly been Rickrolled off the back end of a Rick Astley comeback phenomenon.

But it wasn't all in vain as after a little snooping for the said track, it appears a couple of live rip's have appeared online taken from live recordings of the Dewaele Brothers at their free gig at The Vanguard in LA for I Heart Comix and Creamfields festival thanks to La Friendly. Still the most anticipated release of the year in mine and many others opinion.

It's Pop It's Art

Its competition time kids! Here's the info:

San Miguel Hidden Depths, together with It's Pop It's Art and Airside, has launched an exciting nationwide design competition with the aim of discovering and developing emerging young talent within the UK. The challenge, set by Fred Deakin himself, is to design a new It's Pop It's Art style print which explores the song "War" by Edwin Starr. The winning print will be made commercially available as part of the It's Pop It's Art range and the winner will also receive a design fee for their creation.

Fred Deakin, co-founder of It's Pop It's Art, said: "At Airside we're always on the look out for new design talent. We want people to explore the 'Hidden Depths' of the music and express it on canvas. There is a pool of untapped talent out there and we hope this competition can break into that. "We're looking for something unique, something inspired, something that visually captures the essence of Edwin's words."

Entrants will be asked to go to Sanmiguel.co.uk to submit their competition entry, following the design brief, between now and the 3rd of September 2008.It's Pop It's Art and Airside will then select a shortlist of prints to be exhibited at their San Miguel Hidden Depths event, at London's Amersham Arms on Thursday 18th September.

Deakin, along with illustrator designer Kate Moross, will be amongst the special guest judges selecting the winner on the night. The competition celebrates the final San Miguel Hidden Depths event of 2008, curated by It's Pop It's Art with special guest Sam Sparro.

So, get out your crayons and colouring pens and get busy as you've only got until Wednesday! For more info head over to Sanmiguel.co.uk.
