Put The Needle On The Record

As another year, and indeed another century comes to an end, I wonder where has all the time gone? I guess that's the old man inside me talking. He's slowly taking over as the child with reckless abandon gradually realises he's actually too old for this party thing anymore... yeah right! 'Tis the season to be merry and merry we shall be!

As we do about this time of year I bring you a plethora of fine mixing talent that have grabbed my attention over the past month or so. First up is newcomer Melechtric with a fine blend of tracks that have pretty much made this half of 2009. Check out his Myspace for an awesome bootleg of Stevie Wonder, The Fresh Prince and A Tribe Called Quest. If you dig this mix then don't forget to give him some love over at his Let's Mix page.

Light And Dark

Image: Mr Bojangles

I'm a bit ill educated on the musical history of Lee Coombs but after looking at his release catalog I'd say it was fair to assume that he's one of the prominent DJ's of the past 10 years or so. I received two of his newest tracks that appear on his third album 'Light and Dark', including the title track and I'm hooked. I suggest you have a listen to them too but first here's a bit of info about the man.

‘Light and Dark’ is in Coombs own words “a true tech funk album”, an amalgam of sounds and influences from dance music’s often disparate scenes. Alongside acts like Meat Katie, Dylan Rhymes and Elite Force, Coombs has pioneered this open minded attitude and helped forge the sound of ‘tech funk’, a fusion of techno, breaks, house and electro. On this long player Coombs takes the tech funk spirit and develops it to the n’th degree, it is a true melting pot of influences, from the opening bars of the Diva driven Control with the wonderful Katherine Ellis to the final refrain of the heavily Echo & the Bunnymen inspired ‘Blues I’m Singing’.

Well it looks like the summer is officially over and its time to batten down the hatches for a long wet winter. But, lets not get too down about it all, especially when we've got this cheeky little mix from DJ/Producer Haynes. Heres what he had to say about it;

"Here’s a mixtape I’ve been working on for the last gasps of summer. Its themed as the kind of songs that would go down well as the sunsets, so needless to say quite different from allot of the techno stuff I play. Lots of disco, old and new, but also just things which give a sense of Euphoria. Plus allot of mixing and sampling."

Your Love

Michael Zavros

It's been a little quiet round here of late, mostly due to Bestival, holiday and a shed load of work all blending into one and being over much too soon. Well the work goes on of course. Anyway, I'm in the process of posting some new music so keep em peeled.

First up is a touch of French House from Tysaun Alexanderic who is actually based in South Carolina. The EP title track ' Your Love' has already got plenty of airplay on some summer Ibiza House compilations and even on Radio 1 thanks to Andy George and Jaymo.

The Subs

The Subs

I've almost recovered from my first (if somewhat late) festival experience of the summer at Reading and already can't wait to get out to my next and indeed last, festival of the summer; Bestival. Hopefully the weather doesn't turn the place into the mud pit like last year, but who cares? The line up is awesome!

One act I've yet to check out who indeed will be playing are The Subs and I was fortunate enough to get a preemptive mixtape in my mailbox today to post. I also received a link to a Youtube video they have just compiled from footage festival goers submitted after the band encouraged the crowd to recorded their Pukkelpop set on phones and cameras. Check out the video here.

If you're not heading to Bestival, I highly recommend checking out The Subs at one of their dates next week at either the Egg, London on Sept 11th or Audio, Brighton on 12th Sept. Check out their Myspace for more dates.

Cantina

Cantina

I'm currently in the process of getting reading for Reading Festival this weekend but before I leave I've got one little gem to share with you. A sweet little re-edit from my man Jim Sharp. You can probably guess from the image what it might entail but when I first heard it I didn't have a clue, until the breakdown. Enjoy.

$jammie the Money

I've never heard of $jammie the Money or his band Nobody Beats The Drum but after a listen to his The Money Get Paid EP he's definitely a guy to keep an eye on for the future. His sound is like a fusion of jacking beats with electronic and fidgit samples, kind of like if you put Siriusmo and Trevor Loveys in a blender. The EP is out now on Basserk Records who have kindly shared my favorite track on the EP Get Paid which you can download below. You can listen to the other tracks on the $jammie the Money Myspace and purchase the EP from Beatport here.

Now I'm not a massive fan of the La Roux influx on the radio these days but this remix is one to be heard. Nacey has done it again with a little help from Matt Hemerlein to produce this brilliant take on the track Bulletproof. Also, check out his remix of Wale's Chillin'.

Vote For Me

Dazed Raw Blog Awards

So, I found out this morning that my blog has been shortlisted in the final 15 of the Dazed Raw Blog Awards in the 'music' category. To be quite honest I didn't think I'd even get close to the top along with such blog big guns as Discobelle, Trash Menagerie, Discodust, 20JazzFunkGreats, and a whole heap of like minded competition.

I feel very privileged that my one man show pony of a blog of almost two years even came close. But it's not over yet! I still have a chance of being crowned the top music blog with the help of you. It's now down to the public to vote for their favorite blog so, I'm asking you to head over to Dazed Digital and cast your vote.

Hopefully I have left an impression on your hearts and minds with an independent, friendly, good looking and interesting blog to browse every now and then so you'll cast your vote for me. But don't worry I like totally understand if one of the other 14 comes out top in your list, maybe just tell your friends to vote too so you don't feel so guilty. So get voting! and may the best blog win!

Don't forget you can vote in the other categories too so check out the Fashion, Photography and Arts & Culture shortlisted competitors.

JMP

Agustin Merlo
Image: Agustin Merlo

Native Argentinian, JMP from Buenos Aires has dropped me two tracks recently. The first was his remix of the Presets' Kicking And Screaming a couple of weeks back and today I received his take on Autokratz' Can't Get Enough. Its pretty clear to me that the guy is well versed in electronic music and knows how to build an electro track with suited build-ups and breakdowns and not overcomplicating it with heaps of synth noise. Check these out and be sure to check out his Myspace.

Skanks!

Armitage Skanks!

Last Tuesday I was invited to Skanks! HQ for a guest DJ set and interview with weekly host Boy Wonder. For those unfamiliar with Skanks! the brand was formed back in 1994 by DJ's Boy Wonder and DTISM after they put on a night in Public Life, a bar converted out of a Victorian underground toilet in East London.

After organising nights at Public Life they moved onto the Medicine Bar and in 2005 Skanks! started broadcasting regular radio shows with Nu Skool Breaks Radio. Since then the team has grown in numbers adding Collins303, Miss T, SteelzaWheelz, AWE soundsystem, Ollspin and BubbaKing all playing a varied selection of Hip Hop, Funk, Electro, Breaks, House, Nuskool Breaks and Drum and Bass. More recently Skanks! has been involved with For Boarders By Boarders (see previous post here for info) as well as organising events in London and of course playing at the Nu Skool Breaks tent at Glade Festival this coming weekend.

If you're not heading to Glade Festival this weekend then save the date 15th August as Skanks! take over Dex club in Brixton for an all-dayer/nighter stretching from 12pm through till 6am on Sunday! The event will feature DJs, live acts, live art and prizes, not forgetting the BBQ and hot tub! Head over to the Facebook event for details.

The Skanks! show is broadcast every Tuesday from 7pm-9pm on www.nsbradio.co.uk and you can catch each broadcast again by subscribing to the podcast. My 1 hour DJ set and interview is up now so click on the link below to listen. Thanks again to Boy Wonder and the Skanks! crew for inviting me over, I'm looking forward to Dex!

Summer Madness

Light Boner

"Here it is a groove slightly transformed, just a bit of a break from the norm..." Nope, I'm not talking DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, but the sample they too used in their fair weather feel good hit of the summer. Using Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' fellow US producers Starks & Nacey have created another gem to sit by the pool and sip cocktails to.

If you missed their EP you can get it here. Also, be sure to check out their collective Myspace page and download their mixtape for DURKL.

Radio Soulwax

Radio Soulwax

Also, if you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the current Radio Soulwax tour in person, here's a recording of 2 Many Dj's Live from Rock Werchter on 4th July which was recently posted on Soulwax.info.

If you can ignore the talking over the mix for the first part of the recording it'll eventually highlight most of the tracks they played in Brixton recently. Although at 52:19 the recording appears to have switched to a differnet stage (but we all know the Dewaele brothers like to keep us guessing). Also the mix cuts short of the exremely long P Diddy audio from Felix Da Housecat Vs. Diddy - Jack U they played during the break in Vitalic's La Rock No.1 before (as in Brixton) they bring it back for the Nirvana/ Sonic Youth encore. Enjoy.

For Boarders By Boarders

www.forboardersbyboarders.com

If you're a keen snow boarder, or indeed any boarder for that matter then check out For Boarders By Boarders. Founded in 2006 by three friends that are well used to riding together in some of the UK's best snow parks, For Boarders By Boarders (FBBB) was born on the desire and vision to create a unique event that was based purely on the priority of having fun.

"FBBB voyages to wherever they can frolic (snowdomes, dry slopes, skate parks, art galleries etc) to host events that feature live music, art, and just about anything that has to do with snowboarding and skating.
Part of the concept is to promote the UK scene and push progression. To raise awareness for snowboarding and everything related to it. Creating a platform for the community of snowboard lovers, riders, brands, artists, bands, photographers and filmmakers.
"

Having just taken the FBBB party to Snowdome in Tamworth over the weekend, the crew will be moving on to the following venues over the next few months before the final event at SNO!zone in Milton Keynes.

July 12th - Skaterham, Caterham (Skate jam in the church)
August 14th - SNO!zone, Castleford, Leeds
August 29th & 30th - Snowworld, Landgraaf, Holland (Park re-opening jam)
September 5th - Chill Factor E, Manchester
October 10th - SNO!zone, Milton Keynes (Finals)

At each event the crew bring a sound system and DJ's to entertain the boarders while on the slopes and some of that is broadcast live on internet radio station NBS Radio. There are also competitions and prizes for each event including your chance to ride for free at the final event in Milton Keynes.

Michael Joseph Jackson: August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009 R.I.P

Irrespective of his troubled life and media portrayal Jackson is still without a doubt one, if not the greatest artist of our generation. After working almost 40 years under the scrutiny of the public eye, may he finally rest in peace.

Work For This

Starks & Nacey
Nacey & Steve Starks / Photo by Sexy Fitsum/iLLIMETER

Another artist that has recently been drawn to my attention is Nacey. His remix of Dance Area's 'AA 24/7' for Discobelle's competition got in at 3rd place and although the first and second were good, I definitely preferred the old school sample sound this track favoured. I was therfore quite pleased to get some original productions from Nacey and his party companion Starks in my mailbox this morning. Here's a bit of info about the duo.

Starks & Nacey are two-thirds of Nouveau Riche, a monthly party in Washington, DC, started in 2006 by fellow DJ Gavin Holland. In 2008, the party was awarded "Best Dance Night" in the City Paper’s "Best of DC" issue, and the two have been described by the Washington Post as “some of the District’s more prolific DJs.” Starks & Nacey are known for their high-energy sets and have shared the stage with the likes of The Count & Sinden, AC Slater, Nadastrom, MSTRKRFT, Blaqstarr, Miami Horror, Scottie B and Eli Escobar to name a few. Their productions have won contests on Discobelle and Mad Decent, and recently appeared on Fool's Gold label head Nick Catchdubs's Australian Tour Mix. Their debut EP keeps things moving with an introduction to the duo’s distinctive styles, and their attitude of having fun in the club."

More Than Friends

Fukkk Offf

A couple of weeks late posting this I know but, I've been getting into these tracks after constant looping in my playlists. I first heard of Germany's Fukkk Offf when I heard the Zodiac Cartel remix of his track 'Rave Is King'. I initially favoured the latter but the original is an anthem in it's own right and it even had success at number 1 in the German Club Charts. Anyway, his debut album 'Love Me, Hate Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.' was released on June 8 on NYC’s Coco Machete Records and you can get over at Beatport.

2 Many VJ's

Last Friday I saw 2 Many DJ's bring Radio Soulwax to Brixton O2 Academy in the form of an amazing audio visual DJ set. Each track in their set was accompanied by an animated version of the record sleeve for that particular track. It started with their remix of The Gossip's 'Standing In The Way of control' (above) and made its way through an eclectic mix of new and old edits and remixes, also adjusting the tempo at times to fit in classic Radio Soulwax moments like Dolly Parton's '9 to 5', Aphex Twin's 'Window Licker' and Vitalic's 'La Rock No.1'.

After a good few years of just doing DJ set's under the 2 Many DJ's moniker, it looks like they brothers are going back to their roots to revisit the Radio Soulwax mixtapes and bring a whole new experience to an already legendary definition of genre mixing.

Summer Revenge

The Revenge
Pic: The Revenge

It appears somewhat ironic after enjoying all this good weather while listening to some appetizing summer disco mixtapes that as soon as I get some time to share these with you the sun hides in typical British fashion. Not that these mixtapes need particular circumstance to enjoy I should say but, sun always makes music sound a lot better in my opinion. If you are to believe the hype then this cold spell isn’t to last as we are to experience the warmest summer on record… yeah I’ve heard that one before too.

First up is The Revenge whose productions and mixtapes I’ve recently been introduced to by a fellow disco re-edit fan. Together with Ali Herron he produces re-edits, "deep-as-you-like house, forgotten funk and 80s boogie" under their OOFT! alias. You can find examples of their recent releases on Five20East Records and more so on their OOFT! Music blog.

Here's a live mix recorded back over the Easter holiday last month at Soul City @Embassy Bar, London. Be sure to check out the blog and Myspace for more mixtapes and re-edits.

A month or so ago I was sent the following mixtape by Toronto's TMDP and I was impressed by the selection of records and mixing choice. After the tempo decreases on the forth track it's somewhat apparent it's either a brilliant mix or something engineered by a laptop. Either way I like the diversity to make tracks mix, no matter what the tempo. Something I've been trying to master myself using Serato (without much luck I might add).

TMDP - April Mix 2009.mp3 (Mediafire)
1 Tiger & Woods - Come Down
2 Lovebirds - Gentle
3 Free Disco - Psychedelic Symmetry
4 Soft Rocks - Look East
5 Reverso 68 - Tokyo Disko
6 Ilija Rudman - After Midnight (LSB Remix)
7 Soft Rocks - Midnight Drive
8 Luomo - Tessio (Spektre Remix)
9 Paul Kalkbrenner - Azure

Regulars to the blog may notice that Disco/ deep house re-edits are pretty new around here and I do hope to continue posting about the genre and its sub-genres soon. In the meantime check out these mixes and if you have similar tracks and mixes to share, feel free to forward them on. If you're in London this weekend and need your disco fix then check out Escape from New York @The Queen Of Hoxton. I missed the previous two Bank Holiday events so hopefully the hangover from Saturday will be more forgiving this time. See you there.

Off With Your Heads

Tonight you can catch up-and-coming electro pop trio Fenech Soler for free at Thick As Thieves new night at the recently rebuffed Queen Of Hoxton. I actually played some records between bands back in June last year when Fenech Soler played the Old Blue Last and I was pretty blown away. Get yourself over to the Facebook event for details.

Bit of a slow start to the blog relaunch I know but I've recently moved house which has taken most of my spare time. New music will be coming soon.

Win!

Do you want to be in the above photo, looking down on the masses as you warm up for the likes of Rusko, Caspa, Zinc, Raffertie and Foamo? Well here's your chance, Chew The Fat! are running a competition for you to play a set in the main room at their next event on Friday May 29th. All you have to do is make them a mixtape and get it to them no later than Monday 18th May. The best tape wins a set. Simples.

Here's the info:

1. Record your mix. It can bmore, electro, fidget, house, baile funk, tropical, techno, deep dubstep or maybe a bit of everything. You’ll be playing for an hour so don’t make it any longer than that.

2. Burn it to CD and package it up with a tracklist, your name, DJ name (if different), and e-mail and mobile contact details. Unfortunately we don’t have time to download mixes.

3. Send it to us at Chew the Fat!, Battersea Business Centre, Unit 36, 99-109 Lavender Hill, London, SW11 5QL.

4. Get it to us by Monday May 18th latest. The winner will be announced on Friday 22nd and be playing at The Arches the week after.

2 Many Plastic People

So, last Thursday Riton hosted the first of three parties to celebrate the launch of his new single. Instead of spending all the promo money on proper hype (like adverts, posters, etc.) he's flying over a medley of his closest and most talented friends to play at Plastic People, a tiny 200 people capacity club in the heart of Shoreditch, and charging just a measly £5 to get in.

Last week saw 2manyDjs take to the decks for a stormer of a set. But given that it was only advertised in a mail-out the previous night, although very busy, the queue outside failed to reach more than venue capacity which, left it quite comfortable to dance and not feel the squeeze. This week however will be a different story as rumor has it that French duo Xavier and Gaspard will be the secret guests. Head on over and join the Deadly/ This Is Not London Facebook group to stay in the loop.
