So, I've just seen on twitter that Tensnake's Coma Cat is Mixmag's no.1 top tune of 2010. I've yet to see the article but congratulations to Tensnake, it's definitely one of the better tracks of this past year. He should in fact be thanking Anthony And The Camp for inspiration since he sampled the riff from their track What I Like.
If you're a regular to this blog you've probably heard me mention Jim Sharp. Not only is he an amazing turntablist and DJ, he's also a brilliant producer. In his latest exploration of turning a classic track into a fresh original rework, he's taken on Scott Walker and his best of release Boy Child: 67-70.
Featuring elegant sample looping matched with beefed up percussion and the odd scratched vocal sample, Jim has taken these select tracks and made them his own. Check them out in the player and have a listen to the original tracks via the Youtube links below. Jim Sharp & Scott Walker - Boy Child: Revisited EP is out now on Championship Vinyl records and you can download it from the Soundcloud player below.
Straight from the cities of Dublin and London are two young producer/DJs who over the past two years have taken the underground by storm: Arveene & Misk. As remixers, their credits read like a who's who in electronic dance music, including the likes of Mr. Oizo, The Prodigy, Calvin Harris, Felix da Housecat, Zombie Nation, Kitsune, Ed Banger, Bang Gang, and Turbo.
Check out their recent single Love & Lust released on Plant Music.
On friday 19th Nov Deathwish Disco and Too Hip To Be Square return to 93 Feet East to host their 3rd absolutely free installment of underground breaks, bass, dubstep Vs. hidden treasures and guilty pleasures.
This month Deathwish Disco have the upcoming talents of Flux Pavlion and RackNRuin along with residents Heavy Knights. Next door in room 2 Too Hip To Be Square welcome one half of the now defunct Streetlife DJs; Stew Streetlife along with host Oh-Death and residents Alruii, Fade In Fade Out and Pink Eye.
Here's some deep grooves to get you through your Friday and into the weekend from Pablo Decoder of Minimal Kidz Records. First up some original and remixed productions from Decoder's partner in crime at Minimal Kidz Records; Global Warning featuring a free download. All tracks are available now on his I Love You EP at www.whatpeopleplay.com
Next up some Pablo Decoder productions featuring a sample of Bill Withers to complete a deep and jackin groove. Both tracks are available now on his Best Friends, Wurst Enemies EP Part 1 over at www.whatpeopleplay.com

Well I've just about recovered from Bestival but it won't be long until we do it all again this Friday night as Too Hip To Be Square and Deathwish Disco team up once again in the surrounds of 93 Feet East's dark rooms, court yard and kicking soundsystem. Once again it's free entry and we have a mighty line up boasting the likes of Freestylers, Schema, The Freelance Hellraiser, Heavy Knights, Alruii, Pink Eye and myself. It all kicks off at 7 and goes on until 1am so make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment as it's bound to be a roadblock down there.
Also this will be a very special showcase of the new "3 Decks & EFX" live show the Freestylers are currently performing. To get a little taster check out the recent mix they released on Soundcloud:
We are also very proud to be welcoming The freelance Hellraiser who among other projects will be debuting some new material he's been working on under his Kid Gloves moniker with Freeform Five's Anu Pillai.
Also, Sub Slayers signing Schema will be bringing us their blend of breaks, dubstep and downright dirty noise as they get things going in room two. Check out their recent promo mix here:
This weekend I'm getting my wellies on for Bestival (lets hope it isn't a 2008 pt.2) but, if I wasn't going then I'd be going to the Supatronix Vs Skanks night down at The Rhythm Factory on Saturday 11th September.
From the days of Dex in Brixton, Herbal in Shoreditch, Jamm south of the river to the hot spot of East London, The Rhythm Factory, Skanks and Supatronix have been bouncing off each other for years. With a perfectly mixed, cross genre line up from the crew behind the much loved radio show, Skanks, and a heavy hitting breaks pioneers from Supatronix consisting of Deekline & Wizard, Slyde and Beat Assassins to name but a few, we’re doing it in more style and power on 11th September.
Sets have been tightened and tunes have been mastered in preparation for this special Skankscollaboration. This event will be held close to the Skanks hearts, as it will be the last collaboration event for Skanks for a while. The future hold many developments for Skanks, and we want to make sure that the future is a good one.
Skanks Radio has become more about what we give you guys in terms of new upfront music, pioneering producers, and fresh sounds of all styles. We now feel it’s time to take a step back from the large stages and showcase the more intimate and personal side of the radio; the live lounge sessions, the intimate gigs, the Skanks touches. Skanks is renowned for our cross genre playlists and live performances our Dr Who’s Tardis of a studio, and we’re going to be brining you more and more of this as the year goes on, PLUS more chances to see the acts we’ve have had on the show live in venues across the capital and beyond.
Well the summer's drawing in for yet another year, time to batten down the hatches for winter. But before all of that let's make the most of what's left, especially if you're planning on making Bestival this year. Let's hope it's sunny at least.
It's also been a while since I've shared a personal mix of my favorite records of late aside from the Too Hip To Be Square mixes/ events. So, here's a little sunset mix to top off the summer featuring some disco, house and techno.

This Friday, East London's Victoria Park welcomes L.E.D, a new electronic festival to its grounds for the August Bank Holiday weekend. Now it's a brave move considering the amount of electronic festivals going on this weekend (South West Four, Get Loaded In The Park, Creamfields, Notting Hill Carnival) but it certainly has a lineup to rival it's competitors. It's debut features the likes of Leftfield, David Guetta, Goldfrapp, Aphex Twin, Calvin Harris, Friendly Fires, Annie Mac, Soulwax and Bloody Beetroots to name a few. So if the good old British weather holds out we should be in for a pretty good time.
Now the kind people at L.E.D Festival have given me two pairs of tickets for both days at the festival to give away. So for your chance of winning a pair for both Friday and Saturday just answer the following question:
Who are the Flying Dewaele Brothers better known as?
Send your answers to email@example.com and a winner will randomly selected tonight at 10pm (Thursday).
Jackmode is a DJ agency based in Berlin, home to many a noteable name such as Zombie Disco Squad, Alexander Robotnik, Solo, Oliver $, Act Yo Age and upcoming stars like Monkey Safari and Idiotproof making up this "eclectic but considered roster".
They dropped a few promo's through my mailbox the other day from J Philip, Pol On, Worthy & Yankee Zulu and as it states on the Agency Myspace page; "musically, the common denominator is house music, but subtly peppered with african rhythms, baile funk elements and gypsy sounds". Personally I'm loving the Pol On remix of Brass Construction's 'Happy People'. It's a tight little chugger of tech house breathing out little touches of soul through the classic disco sample. Download while you can.
Still not got your tickets for Field Day, one of London's finest festivals happening this weekend? Well fret not as here is your chance to win two tickets courtesy of InterCasino.co.uk
For a chance to win, simply send a blank email with "I WANT FIELD DAY TICKETS" as the email header to COMPETITION CLOSED and the winner will be picked at random on Thursday 29th July. Tickets will either be posted or can be collected from East London before the event this Saturday.
The competition is open until midnight on Wednesday 28th July 2010. Only one entry per email address. Multiple entries will be deleted.
Also, be sure to check out this Spotify playlist made by the guys at Bugged Out! as an nice taster for their stage at Field Day 2010 on Saturday.

Along with the Bigger Than Barry Crew he's currently remixing, producing and releasing under the Barry Records label. Check out some material via his Soundcloud or previous posts here and here.

Later on the main room Deathwish Disco will open to the hefty breaks, dubstep and bassline talent of Crtl Z, Kiss100's Jay Cunning and Heavy Knights. All this for the tidy sum of... well nothing!!
Checkout the Facebook Event for more details. For a pre-event warm up check out these mixtapes from La Grève Générale, Alruii, Jay Cunning & Heavy Knights. I'll be posting a new Too Hip To Be Square mix later in the week.
I've been listening to The Revenge's 'House Is Here (War Is Over) Mix' for a couple of weeks now and I'm really loving the last track in the mix by Stacy Kidd who, as it turns out is Paul Johnson's (of 'Get Get Down' fame) cousin. Its an awesome Chicago house chugger of a track that came out back in 2003 on an EP with Gene Farris called the Showdown E.P. Vol.1 on Camouflage Recordings. Here's a rip from the mix, I'm trying to track down a 320k mp3 if anyone can help?
So, almost four years down the line and having got through just as many producers the Klaxon's second album will be out this year. Having seen their first attempt at a follow up album to their debut 'Myths Of The Near Future' scrapped after being rejected by the band's label Polydor, the news that the album 'Surfing The Void' will be out this summer has been confirmed with the release of album artwork above.
A track off the album called 'Flashover' had its debut on Zane Lowe's radio show back in May and has been available to listen to on the band's website and Myspace page since. Apparently it is not due for an official single release, but instead the first single to be released prior to the albums release later in August, will be the yet unaired 'Echoes'.
Tracklist: 1. Echoes 2. The Same Space 3. Surfing The Void 4. Valley of The Calm Trees 5. Venusia 6. Extra Astronomical 7. Twin Flames 8. Flashover 9. Future Memories 10. Cypherspeed
The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin Released: 10/11/67
So while shuffling my way through Spotify I heard the track above by The Moody Blues. Now is it me or is there a similarity between the intro of 'Nights In White Satin' and 'Earth Song' by Michael Jackson?
More notable for his performance behind a drum kit with Soulwax, Steve Slingeneyer has been using his down time to fuel his growing production and DJ status as One Man Party. Here's a recent mix he made for Vice Magazine along with a new track 'Listen To The Bass'. For a demo it doesn't sound that bad, give it a bit of fine tuning in the studio, possibly some final production from his Soulwax counterparts and he may just have a club banger.
Catch him DJing at the following nights: 17 June : OMP @ Kaserne - Basel 25 June : OMP @ Little Johnny Russells - Portsmouth 26 June : OMP @ The Lock Tavern - London 27 June : OMP @ Sea Sessions festival - Bundoran 02 July : OMP @ The prime time of your life @ the Universe Club - Stuttgart 03 July : OMP @ Electric Shake Festival - Dublin 10 July : OMP @ Lincoln Hall - Chicago 16 July : OMP @ Avalon - Hollywood
Been a while since I posted anything. Finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel after spending what seemed like a lifetime producing the new tour merchandise for Muse among other things.
Anyway, I'm counting down the hours until I jet off to a little holiday so, I thought I'd share some mixes that have been really helping me get through the past few weeks. They're in a bit more of a party vein than the usual stuff I post which, in a way is what I'm feeling at the moment.
I've been getting a bit tired of the electro and techno mixes flying about these days. Its been nice to listen to familiar sounds and not fall into a techno k-hole. By the way, what ever happened to those campaigns about three years ago against minimal tech? Did these people just follow the crowd and discover that everyone is producing music with white noise, hand claps and minimal beats? Way'd a go innovator. Enjoy your Bank Holiday kids.
Also on Sunday night Too Hip To Be Square returns for not just one but two May Bank Holiday weekend parties on Sunday 2nd & Sunday 30th at The Albert & Pearl, Islington. Featuring the DJ talents of Jim Sharp, Fab Fatale and myself spinning the finest hip-hop, house, disco, electronica and rock of the past five or so decades. Check out the Facebook Event for more details.

So last week (March 31st) Eddy Temple Morris was fighting the Dead Kids' cause against Coco Sumner over her apparently ripping them off in her new song 'Caesar'. Temple Morris was claiming that the song sounded very similar to that of 'Into The Fire' by Dead Kids and if you compare the two tracks here, I'd say he's quite right.
Anyway, this reminded me of a feature I had been meaning to add to the blog for a while. I'm the type of person who listens to the melody more than the lyrics in music. Often leading me to hear similarities or hints of completely different tunes in random tracks.
Be some of them far fetched or plain outright copies I'll be posting a few I've heard recently on the blog. Submissions are also welcomed so, if you have two (or more) records that you've heard that sound familiar, no matter how small or big the sample/ part is. Drop me a message to firstname.lastname@example.org or add the tracks in the comments below.
I Blame Coco feat. Robyn - Caesar Released: 31/01/10
Well I was getting pretty used to having some time off over the Easter break, unfortunately the quarterly electricity bill just came through the door along with my council tax. Time to get down to business. Sigh.
It's not all doom and gloom in sunny London though. Spring appears to be officially here and I'm trawling emails to the tune of a fine mixtape from Lorenz Rhode. Recently recorded for the Data Transmission Podcast. Check it out below or via the Exploited Soundcloud.
The latest EP out on Gung Ho! is from New Zealand born DJ/Producer Luke Walker. I'm new to his name and productions but his track 'I'm Running' is a quality electro chugger. The EP has been getting support from the likes of Autokratz, Tim Findlay (Groove Armada), Andy George and The Japanese Popstars among others. Check it out at Beatport.
Thanks to all those who made it down to The Queen Of Hoxton on Friday, it went off!! Big thanks to Best Laid Plans and all DJs and bands who played. The next event is an Easter special this Thursday April 1st featuring Jim Sharp, Yo Mama! DJs, Oh-Death & Pink Eye and its free entry!! So come kick off your Easter weekend with a good old knees up on the disco dancefloor of The Electricity Showrooms. More details on the Facebook Event.
