Too Hip To Be Square 3rd Birthday Mix

Facebook Event

On Friday 14th December we celebrate Too Hip To Be Square's 3rd Birthday at The Star of Bethnal Green. In preparation for the night, I have mixed this special 3rd Birthday Mix. The mix was going to be based on choosing 3 tracks from the different genre's we feature on the night (3x funk, 3x soul, 3x hip hop, 3x disco, 3x house & 3x electronica). However, caught up in the moment there's a few extra tracks thrown in for good measure.

Be sure to join our celebrations this coming Friday from 9pm-2am with free entry all night.

Facebook Event

Way back in December 2009 I stepped out from behind the blog to start a night of guest DJs spinning guilty pleasures and hidden treasures, past and present, in a small bar in Haggerston.

Three years on and the Too Hip To Be Square brand has been privileged to host guest headliners that include Ali B (Kiss FM), 2 Bit Thugs, Neoteric (Dubsided), Arveene (Arveene & Misk), Stew Streetlife (Streetlife DJs), DJ Matman (DMC champ), Mooqee, The Freelance Hellraiser and Jim Sharp. With monthly residencies and events hosted at 93 Feet East, The Westbury, All Star Lanes, C.A.M.P, Electricity Showrooms and Queen Of Hoxton the resident team has now expanded to 5x resident DJ's & 2x AVDJ's.

This month we’re bringing the Too Hip To Be Square party to The Star of Bethnal Green to celebrate our 3rd birthday in style, with residents Alruii, White Tyson, Fade In Fade Out and myself spinning the finest hip-hop, funk, soul, disco house and electronica all night long.

Check out the Facebook event for more details.

Here's the 5 minute minimix I made a while back with a previous to the sounds to expect on the night:

Good Vibes Mix for Goodhood

http://goodhoodstore.com/
You may already be aware but boutique clothing store Goodhood have been publishing a series of mixtapes from various DJ's and contributors on their Soundcloud for their Sunday mix series; Good Vibes.

I was recently asked to contribute a mixtape taking a more relaxed approach bearing in mind the vibe is of course music suitable for a chilled Sunday listening. So I dug deep in the crates aside from the usual Too Hip To Be Square vibe of things and put together a 50 minute mix of soul, jazz, funk and hip hop. The mix is now available to listen via Soundcloud:

Also, my last Too Hip To Be Square - Summer Mix in collaboration with Roktic is now available for limited download via my Soundcloud:

Straighten It Out Volume 2

As you might have been able to tell things are pretty quiet on the blog as of late. No excuse other than I'm simply too busy at the moment to post everything I find. However, I do always make time for friends so, in tradition on this blog it's time for another amazing mixtape from the good Jim Sharp.

"It's been seven months since Straighten It Out Volume 1 dropped. I was completely surprised and humbled by the amount of support it received. Since then I've taken over the Saturday residency at The Paradise from Ali B (who has moved to Canada) and every week the crowd is still getting down to Funk & Soul with some Hip Hop, Reggae and Disco sprinkled on top. Volume 2 represents some of the new sounds and tunes I've been running on Saturdays. I'm not including a tracklist this time around but I'm going to be dropping various edits from the mix in the upcoming weeks."

Check out his mix and new edit's below and keep an eye on his Soundcloud for more

Too Hip To Be Square & Roktic Present; Summer Mix

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After a ridiculously busy start to the summer I've managed to find time to put together a new mix in collaboration with boutique store Roktic and my night Too Hip To Be Square.

It's a collection of summer grooves I've been spinning of late, everything from hip hop to soul to disco and even some soulful house and garage numbers. Sun blissed tracks for those summer days by the pool, beach and paddling pool.

Straighten It Out

http://soundcloud.com/jimsharp

Regular blog favorite Jim Sharp is back with a fresh to death mixtape of his finest edits of funk, soul and hip hop.

Having spent the past 2 years as a resident for Ali B's legendary Funk & Soul weekly Saturday sessions at The Paradise, Kensal Green; Jim is no stranger to knowing how to rock a crowd. This new mix "represents the sound of early night to prime time. In the tradition of Ali's great 'Oh Shit!' mix series, this mix gives you a taste of the packed dancefloor that goes off every week."

Be sure to check out his Soundcloud for downloads of the tracks featured in the mix plus heaps more.

On Saturday 4th February the Too Hip To Be Square crew and myself return to West London party spot The Westbury for another shindig of party vibes and rare grooves. This month we are joined by DMC champ 2005 and Droppin' Science co-host & resident DJ Matman. His previous DJ set at Too Hip To Be Square back in May last year is undoubtedly one of the best we've had let's see if he can topple it with his eclectic music and scratching technique.
