On Saturday 4th February the Too Hip To Be Square crew and myself return to West London party spot The Westbury for another shindig of party vibes and rare grooves. This month we are joined by DMC champ 2005 and Droppin' Science co-host & resident DJ Matman. After a brief hiatus, this coming Saturday 3rd December I make a return to hosting my Too Hip To Be Square night but this time at The Westbury, West London. It's been two years since I started the night dedicated to playing both my guests and my own favorite records of the past 5 decades.

After stumbling across DJ Moar's Soundcloud earlier I think this Parisian deserves some extra credit. His Myspace claims he was a "Breaker in 1982, Tagger in 1989, Mc in 1993, Beatmaker Since 1996, Dj Since 2000, Co-owner & A&R of Trad Vibe Records since 2005..." other than that I'm pretty new to his music. He was one of the best DJ's I have had the pleasure of seeing live. He had such a passion for the music he played, and love for the crowd he played to.

This set he played as part of the Live at Revival Ontario Beats Fool's Gold Tour alongside A-Trak is a fine example of his eclectic taste in music and ability to cut and mix between genres. The part about half way through when he drops Signatune is incredible. An aspiring DJ who many admired and who many aspired to be, he will be greatly missed.

In just over 1 weeks time on Friday 19th I'll be back at 93 Feet East hosting Too Hip To Be Square in the bar with Deathwish Disco in the main room. This will be our last event at 93 Feet East before we take a break from our monthly residency than has spanned over a year there. It's not the end of Too Hip To Be Square, we'll be back soon.

So, not letting this last event dampen our spirits we intend to go out with a bang. Along with free giveaways on the night we have DJ Pepper joining us for an eclectic party set. Both Alruii and myself will be spinning early with Fade In Fade Out doing a live AV/DJ set, then the residents will be going back to back for an allstars set to finish the night.

Next door Deathwish Disco are certainly not going out with a whimper either as they bring back the mighty Elite Force and fellow U&A Recordings signing The Loops Of Fury who along with residents Heavy Knights plan to bring the base face upon Brick Lane one last time.

Greg Wilson, one of my favorite DJ's and remixer's is currently releasing previously unreleased & limited release edits via his Soundcloud page:

"Having finally got around to upgrading my SoundCloud account, I'm going to start uploading a whole heap of edits and remixes, in addition to the DJ mixes I regularly add, at the rate of at least a wav a week. This will be ongoing (a lot of stuff to get up there) and include downloads available to all, but also downloads that are only privately accessible."

What's interesting is the description accompanying each edit like, when he sampled Oliver Cheatham’s 1983 release ‘Get Down Saturday Night' for his ‘Twister’/'Time And Place (Disco Break)' only to leave it on the backburner too long, before Vito Lucente who scored a #1 hit with the Room 5 single ‘Make Luv’ sampling the very same record in 2002. I think you'd agree that Wilsons edit beats Lucente's naff house remix any day.

Remember a few years back when Ed Banger records was really kicking off and all the blog's were on fire with the latest "blog house" tunes? Yeah funny that. Well while we wait for Justice to come out of retirement for a greatest hits tour we'll have to look for the next likely lad/lad's(/laddette's?) to re-surface amoungst the techno and dubstep currently flooding the airwaves.

One such likely contender is a guy called Choreo who's influence and sound is not too dissimilar to Justice, or Daft punk for that matter. Touching on early Daft Punk-esque melodies accompanied with heavy grinding electro similar to that from Augé and De Rosnay.

I've yet to see the article but congratulations to Tensnake, it's definitely one of the better tracks of this past year. He should in fact be thanking Anthony And The Camp for inspiration since he sampled the riff from their track What I Like.

If you're a regular to this blog you've probably heard me mention Jim Sharp. Not only is he an amazing turntablist and DJ, he's also a brilliant producer. In his latest exploration of turning a classic track into a fresh original rework, he's taken on Scott Walker and his best of release Boy Child: 67-70.

Featuring elegant sample looping matched with beefed up percussion and the odd scratched vocal sample, Jim has taken these select tracks and made them his own. Well I've just about recovered from Bestival but it won't be long until we do it all again this Friday night as Too Hip To Be Square and Deathwish Disco team up once again in the surrounds of 93 Feet East's dark rooms, court yard and kicking soundsystem. Once again it's free entry and we have a mighty line up boasting the likes of Freestylers, Schema, The Freelance Hellraiser, Heavy Knights, Alruii, Pink Eye and myself. It all kicks off at 7 and goes on until 1am so make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment as it's bound to be a roadblock down there.

This weekend I'm getting my wellies on for Bestival (lets hope it isn't a 2008 pt.2) but, if I wasn't going then I'd be going to the Supatronix Vs Skanks night down at The Rhythm Factory on Saturday 11th September.

From the days of Dex in Brixton, Herbal in Shoreditch, Jamm south of the river to the hot spot of East London, The Rhythm Factory, Skanks and Supatronix have been bouncing off each other for years. With a perfectly mixed, cross genre line up from the crew behind the much loved radio show, Skanks, and a heavy hitting breaks pioneers from Supatronix consisting of Deekline & Wizard, Slyde and Beat Assassins to name but a few, we’re doing it in more style and power on 11th September.

Sets have been tightened and tunes have been mastered in preparation for this special Skankscollaboration. This event will be held close to the Skanks hearts, as it will be the last collaboration event for Skanks for a while. The future hold many developments for Skanks, and we want to make sure that the future is a good one.

Skanks Radio has become more about what we give you guys in terms of new upfront music, pioneering producers, and fresh sounds of all styles. We now feel it’s time to take a step back from the large stages and showcase the more intimate and personal side of the radio; the live lounge sessions, the intimate gigs, the Skanks touches. This Friday, East London's Victoria Park welcomes L.E.D, a new electronic festival to its grounds for the August Bank Holiday weekend. Now it's a brave move considering the amount of electronic festivals going on this weekend (South West Four, Get Loaded In The Park, Creamfields, Notting Hill Carnival) but it certainly has a lineup to rival it's competitors. It's debut features the likes of Leftfield, David Guetta, Goldfrapp, Aphex Twin, Calvin Harris, Friendly Fires, Annie Mac, Soulwax and Bloody Beetroots to name a few. So if the good old British weather holds out we should be in for a pretty good time.

Jackmode is a DJ agency based in Berlin, home to many a noteable name such as Zombie Disco Squad, Alexander Robotnik, Solo, Oliver $, Act Yo Age and upcoming stars like Monkey Safari and Idiotproof making up this "eclectic but considered roster".

They dropped a few promo's through my mailbox the other day from J Philip, Pol On, Worthy & Yankee Zulu and as it states on the Agency Myspace page; "musically, the common denominator is house music, but subtly peppered with african rhythms, baile funk elements and gypsy sounds". Personally I'm loving the Pol On remix of Brass Construction's 'Happy People'. It's a tight little chugger of tech house breathing out little touches of soul through the classic disco sample. Just got this great mix from co label owner and Bigger Than Barry resident DJ Tom Shorterz. This Birmingham born DJ and producer is part of the Bangers & Mash DJ collective and has already played to crowds as far as Canada, Ibiza and in the Costa Del Sol. We'll be kicking off in the Pink Bar at 7pm featuring the superb talent of La Grève Générale, Alruii, Pink Eye and myself all on a mission to wind down your working week and warm up those dancing feet to the sound of hip-hop, house, disco, electronica and rock.

I've been listening to The Revenge's 'House Is Here (War Is Over) Mix' for a couple of weeks now and I'm really loving the last track in the mix by Stacy Kidd who, as it turns out is Paul Johnson's (of 'Get Get Down' fame) cousin. Its an awesome Chicago house chugger of a track that came out back in 2003 on an EP with Gene Farris called the Showdown E.P. Vol.1 on Camouflage Recordings. Surfing The Void

So, almost four years down the line and having got through just as many producers the Klaxon's second album will be out this year. Having seen their first attempt at a follow up album to their debut 'Myths Of The Near Future' scrapped after being rejected by the band's label Polydor, the news that the album 'Surfing The Void' will be out this summer has been confirmed with the release of album artwork above.

A track off the album called 'Flashover' had its debut on Zane Lowe's radio show back in May and has been available to listen to on the band's website and Myspace page since. Apparently it is not due for an official single release, but instead the first single to be released prior to the albums release later in August, will be the yet unaired 'Echoes'.

More notable for his performance behind a drum kit with Soulwax, Steve Slingeneyer has been using his down time to fuel his growing production and DJ status as One Man Party. Here's a recent mix he made for Vice Magazine along with a new track 'Listen To The Bass'. For a demo it doesn't sound that bad, give it a bit of fine tuning in the studio, possibly some final production from his Soulwax counterparts and he may just have a club banger.

Been a while since I posted anything. Finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel after spending what seemed like a lifetime producing the new tour merchandise for Muse among other things.

Anyway, I'm counting down the hours until I jet off to a little holiday so, I thought I'd share some mixes that have been really helping me get through the past few weeks. They're in a bit more of a party vein than the usual stuff I post which, in a way is what I'm feeling at the moment.

I've been getting a bit tired of the electro and techno mixes flying about these days. Its been nice to listen to familiar sounds and not fall into a techno k-hole. By the way, what ever happened to those campaigns about three years ago against minimal tech? Did these people just follow the crowd and discover that everyone is producing music with white noise, hand claps and minimal beats? Way'd a go innovator. Enjoy your Bank Holiday kids.

So last week (March 31st) Eddy Temple Morris was fighting the Dead Kids' cause against Coco Sumner over her apparently ripping them off in her new song 'Caesar'. Temple Morris was claiming that the song sounded very similar to that of 'Into The Fire' by Dead Kids and if you compare the two tracks here, I'd say he's quite right.

Anyway, this reminded me of a feature I had been meaning to add to the blog for a while. I'm the type of person who listens to the melody more than the lyrics in music. Often leading me to hear similarities or hints of completely different tunes in random tracks.

Well it has been a long time coming but I'd thought I'd take time to thank all of you for your support of my work since I started printing T-shirts and writing stuff on this blog back in 2007.
What started out as a part time hobby has slowly taken over any free time I get from working the 9-5 and I have no plans to stop any time soon.

For the time being I'm juggling my love for DJing, screenprinting tee's & prints, blogging and hosting the odd party or two with my day job designing T-shirts for bands at Firebrand Live Ltd. Most DJ's I know of are blokes. So, when one of the fairer sex comes along, more often or not she's either backed up with a crew and is part of a 'collective' or she's actually terrible at mixing. Sometimes this isn't the case, especially if you've had the pleasure of listening to DJ Cassette.

Now fair enough, she's sent a mix and like most people these days we're all using software to 'tidy' our mixes and cover our mistakes, but when you consider her growing reputation amoungst the hippest parties in town then I'm willing to take a bet she's actually not half bad.

Exit Through The Gift Shop

There has already been speculation this week surrounding Bansky's debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Now our friends at Little Art Book have posted some more info about the film 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' which, is billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie".

"Exit Through The Gift Shop will have its world premiere at the festival on Sunday. It is described as the story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on him.
Infamous artist Banksy said: "It's the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed". The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work. But until the film is shown, it is not known whether Banksy's identity will be revealed."

Too Hip To Be Square

Apologies for the shameless self promotion on the blog of late, I'm afraid it's all I've been able to squeeze in. Not just because its been a pretty busy start to the year but that, in all honesty, there hasn't been much in the way of exciting music recently. Which, in a way was inspiration for the Too Hip To Be Square night I'm running.

Albeit a night of music new and old, the aim is to find inspiration in and appreciate the music we have created, loved, and to avoid thinning out the rich texture of sound giving way to a future of minimal beats and glitches. There are plenty of night's divulging in that genre should it be more your thing. If however you want to partake in a brief history of half decent tracks from a plethora or genres from the past five decades then Too Hip To Be Square might be your thing.

This month we welcome Fade In Fade Out (Best Laid Plans), a DJ/VJ/AV collective from London who have brought their unique style to many live shows, including the likes of Fake Blood, Evil Nine, Stanton Warriors, Eddie Temple Morris, Justin Roberston, Dan le Sac VS Scroobius Pip, Nathan Fake, The Ghost Frequency and Chew Lips but to name a few. Also playing will be Pink Eye who endeavours to bring you the best in audio attention deficit disorder. Expect nothing (and everything) but the unexpected as he smashes up genres and stops at nothing to rock the boat.

AudioFun is a Manchester based producer who has recently captured the attention of Southern Fried Records after some damn fine original material and remix work for the likes of Tonka and Micky Slim. Roktic “Too hip to be square” Pop-Up Shop

Following on from the success of September 09's pop-up shop, Roktic return to East Gallery with a new concept store representing independent and underground streetwear labels from around the world.

The event will focus around the release of a limited edition exclusive print and t-shirt collaboration between Oh Death, Little Art book and Roktic to celebrate Roktic's 1st Year Anniversary.

Prints and artwork by The Prodigy, Ded, RYCA, Rugman, The Krah, Static, Dscreet, Stik, Adam Hemuss and a few others will be available, as well as The UK Vinyl Toy Expo "The Joy Of Toy" who will feature a collection of toys for sale.

The store is open from 8th January - 28th January 2010, 11AM -7PM Tuesday - Sunday.

As another year, and indeed another century comes to an end, I wonder where has all the time gone? I guess that's the old man inside me talking. He's slowly taking over as the child with reckless abandon gradually realises he's actually too old for this party thing anymore... yeah right! 'Tis the season to be merry and merry we shall be!
